Nisagini - Phase I

“Lifting people out of poverty can have trickle-up economic effects and raise all boats”

These days, Sri Lanka's economy is in a very precarious situation. So, it is a very difficult time to satisfy the hunger of the people. This time, we the Leo Club of University of Colombo decided to put manuals in an activity to alleviate the hunger of people who are in economic difficulty.

For that purpose, we have decided on the new series of events of project 'Nisagini', which is organized by University of Colombo Leo Club for the sixth time. So, 'Nisagini 6.0' started in November 2023. We organized this project in three phases.

In our first phase, we decided to help a family with economic difficulties to harvest a fallow field. So, for that, we found a family in Wanduramba, Galle who haven’t sufficient income to maintain a paddy field. Then our committee decided on the budget by collecting more details, how we should raise funds for this event, etc. Then our chairperson suggested selling the tickets as the major fundraising activity. So, we also agreed to him and then after we collected funds from selling tickets in various public places.

On the 18th of November, we did this phase. Our team members went there and helped those people with paddy-sowing activities. Near fifteen of our members joined this event and we thought they must have felt that solidarity. We brought refreshments also for them. After the end of the day, those people were more thankful to us for our charity.

As the sun set on the day of our collective efforts, a sense of accomplishment resonated within our team. The bonds formed through shared labor and the exchange of gratitude affirmed the spirit of community that transcends economic barriers. Moving forward, we remain committed to the principles of 'Nisagini 6.0,' knowing that each act of kindness contributes to the upliftment of not just one family but the community as a whole.

As we reflect on the success of this phase, we eagerly anticipate the positive ripples it will create, echoing the belief that lifting one family out of poverty has the potential to uplift an entire community.
