Project Sahurda Yathra
The
project ‘Sahurda Yathra’ organized by the Leo Club of University of Colombo was
initiated under the category of Helping hand to Differently Abled. The project
was implemented in three phases by aiming the needs like provide enjoyment,
develop facilities of the surrounding, enhance the living style of the
differently abled community, avoid discrimination, change the perception of
employers and provide medical incentives of different types of differently
abled people.
Phase 1
The
first phase of the project was conducted on 07th of January 2020 at
Diri Daru Piyasa, Panadura premises. The programme was started with a cleanup
of the surrounding. Thereafter a crafts competition was held with the aim of
enhancing the lifestyle of the children in Diri Daru Piyasa. Moreover, we arranged an opportunity to have
face painting for the children. Finally, an entertainment programme and a DJ
session were held by the collaboration of the singing crew of Faculty of
Management and Finance, University of Colombo by providing them with enjoyment
and mental health development.
Differently
abled children should be cared and welcomed to the society. Those children
enjoyed the programme very much from the beginning to end because they are
living in a closed, sequestered environment and our attempt of avoiding abandonment and
concealment of differently abled children was successfully completed with the
immense support of the committee members and Leo club members.
Phase 2
The second phase of the project was conducted
on 16th of January 2020 at Faculty of Arts, University of Colombo
premises with the aim of avoiding discrimination of
differently abled and provide them with an incentive to strengthen their
capabilities and to develop their self confidence. It
consisted of a motivation programme by a well reputed motivation speaker Mr. Lahiru Rathnayake about how to win our lives by
going through difficulties and how to convert our weaknesses into strengths in
order to achieve our goals. An awareness
session was also conducted for the differently abled undergraduates about the
job opportunities in the job market. The speech was so understandable, so the
participants were really interested about the knowledge and facts which was
shared by the speaker.
Afterwards we launched a sticker campaign at University of Colombo
with the intention of acknowledging the society on avoiding the discrimination
of those differently abled undergraduates.
Phase 3
The final phase of the project was focused more on
our war heroes in Kurunagala, Abimansala premises those who obtained a unique
achievement in the war. Our war heroes become differently abled because they
had put their lives in to the risk for the sake of our mother country. As they spend
secluded and neglected lives there, we thought of conducting a spend the day
programme with them to fill their lives with abundant joy and happiness.
In order to make this dream come into a reality, we obtain
support from the 1 Battalian Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment Army Band. We arranged
many fun activities, games which they can engage in there wheel chairs. They
really enjoyed the day while actively participating in games, singing and
dancing though they are in their wheel chairs. After that they were treated by
an evening tea. Not only that, we donated a medical trolley and equipments
which were an essential need for them for their medical treatments with the
contribution of our well wishers and team members.
As the proud Sri Lankan citizens and Leo club
members, we would be able to show our sincere gratitude towards our braved war
heroes.
‘Sahurda Yathra’ was achieved a great success
because of the contribution of all the committee members. As the Leo Club of
University of Colombo, we are thankful to all the participants and contributors
who spent their valuable time and effort in order to make this project a
success. We really appreciated the
blessings and efforts of each and every person who contributed to conclude this
project successfully.
