Diabcure - Phase I "Suwabara Hetak"
Diabcure - Phase I "Suwabara Hetak"
Diabetes
is a significant worldwide health issue and is among the top four
non-communicable diseases. It's now considered an epidemic due to its
widespread occurrence. In Sri Lanka, around 8.7% of adults have diabetes, over
one of 12 adults is affected by diabetes. These numbers emphasize the needs of
increasing the awareness and attention to address the impact of diabetes on
society.
Embarking on a mission to turn the dreams of many people suffering from diabetes into reality, the forward-thinking "Diabcure 6.0" project of the Leo club of University of Colombo aims to shine a light of hope for a healthy future. This project aims to raise societal awareness regarding diabetes while offering essential supports to individuals affected by the condition.
Initially,
our attention centered on securing the funds essential for the project. The
project team discussed how to secure the essential funds for the project and
all agreed to sell tickets in public places to raise the essential funds.
District
Hospital, Mathugama was selected to implement the first phase of our project.
This phase is called "Suvabara Hetak" and in this phase, the medical
equipment required for diabetic patients is provided. The medical kit comprises
a Clever Check glucometer, 200 Clever Check strips, and four plaster rolls. Before
distributing this equipment, our chairperson met with Dr. Damin and discussed
the shortage of these supplies. About fifteen project members, along with
several hospital staff led by doctors, participated in this event, which was
successfully completed on January 20th.
There,
Dr. Daminda explained the necessity of this equipment grant and emphasized
that, as management students, it is important to pay attention to such aspects.
Also, we were informed about the systematic arrangement of how they store the
related equipment and dispatch it when needed.
By day's end, we were not only content with the project's success, but it's worth mentioning that each of us felt inspired to engage in more social missions. With the steadfast support and dedication of every member, we successfully concluded the initial phase of our "Diabcure 6.0" project. Our heartfelt thanks go out to all those who provided support and guidance, leading to the successful conclusion of our first phase.
Let's come together, hand in hand, to strive
for a healthier tomorrow and fulfill the dreams of our fellow citizens dealing
with diabetes.
