Project Sahurda Yathra 5.0 – Phase 01
"Senehe Yathra: Every Step Counts in the Journey of Caring."
In the spirit of extending a helping hand to those in need, the Leo Club of University of Colombo initiated the "Sahurda Yathra" project, focusing on providing assistance to differently-abled individuals. The first phase of this heartwarming project, named "Senehe Yathra," unfolded on January 29, 2024, at the Rewatha Mapiya Sewana Elderly Home, Bandaragama , marking the club's 5th consecutive year of organizing this impactful event.
Sahurda Yathra team collaborated with the medical team of Bandaragama District Hospital to conduct a comprehensive medical check-up programme. This initiative aimed to address the unique healthcare needs of the 14 disabled and Down syndrome elders residing at the elderly home. For many, this marked the first time in years that such a programme had been organized within their living environment. The medical team's expertise helped identify various health conditions, providing invaluable insights for the residents.
Understanding the challenges faced by individuals in such homes to organize events, we went beyond medical support. A lively entertainment programme followed the medical check-up, bringing joy and smiles to the elders' faces. The day concluded with a delightful spread of snacks and beverages, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Recognizing the practical needs of the elderly residents, we extended our support by providing essential equipment and goods. We presented them with much-needed items such as a gas cooker, blankets, bed sheets and pillowcases, aiming to enhance their daily comfort and well-being.
The success of "Senehe Yathra" wouldn't have been possible without the collaborative efforts of various individuals and organizations. We express heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated members of Sahurda Yathra team for their hard work in organizing this programme. Special thanks go to the medical team of Bandaragama District Hospital for their vital support in ensuring the success of the medical check-up and physiotherapy sessions. Appreciation is also extended to the matron of the elderly home for providing the opportunity to carry out this meaningful initiative.
"Senehe Yathra" of the Sahurda Yathra project exemplifies the Leo Club's commitment to make a positive impact on the lives of differently-abled individuals. We look forward for future phases of the project, with the hope of continuing to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those they serve.
