Sindu Nala Raksha 8.0 - Phase 03

Sindu Nala Raksha 8.0 – Threads of Hope

The final phase of Sindu Nala Raksha 8.0 – Threads of Hope was a powerful step towards marine conservation, as we took action to protect and restore the Dodanduwa Coastal Area, Galle. With the combined efforts of passionate volunteers from the Society of Oceanography and Marine Geology, University of Ruhuna and committed project members, we successfully conducted an underwater cleanup and beach cleanup, making a tangible impact on our environment.

A major part of this initiative was the underwater cleanup, conducted with the guidance and expertise of the "Dodanduwa Diving and Water Sports Club". The diving sessions were carried out by skilled divers from the Society of Oceanography and Marine Geology, University of Ruhuna, who played a crucial role in retrieving abandoned fishing nets and other debris that had been strangling marine ecosystems beneath the waves. Over the course of a two-hour dive, they successfully removed numerous hazardous fishing nets and other underwater waste, helping to prevent further harm to marine life. While the divers worked beneath the waves, Sindu Nala Raksha project members took charge of cleaning up the Dodanduwa Fishing Harbour and surrounding beach areas. Their dedication and teamwork led to the removal of large amounts of waste, primarily discarded materials left behind by fishermen. From plastic bottles to fishing gear debris it was a step towards a cleaner and safer coastal environment. Ensuring proper waste management was a key part of our project. After collecting the garbage from both land and sea, we coordinated with the Hikkaduwa Urban Council to hand over the collected waste for appropriate disposal. This crucial step helped prevent further pollution and reinforced the importance of sustainable waste management practices.

Another meaningful initiative carried out during this phase was the donation of durable mats to the Peradeniya veterinary hospital that provides care for injured and sick animals including aquatic animals. These mats will provide comfort and a more sanitary resting space for recovering animals, supporting the hospital’s ongoing efforts in wildlife rehabilitation. This contribution reflects our commitment not just to cleaning up the environment, but also to ensuring the well-being of marine life affected by pollution and human activities.

The success of Sindu Nala Raksha 8.0 – Threads of Hope would not have been possible without the dedication and support of our team. A heartfelt thank you to the Leo Club of University of Colombo Executive Committee and Directors for their continuous guidance and unwavering support throughout this initiative. Special appreciation goes out to all project members who showed amazing participation and enthusiasm, proving that collective action can create real change. Though this marks the conclusion of Sindu Nala Raksha 8.0, our commitment to environmental conservation does not end here. Together, we have made a difference and together, we will continue to advocate for a cleaner, healthier planet. Thank you to everyone who joined hands with us to make this project a resounding success!
