Hope Beyond Probation: A Step Toward Social Reintegration Through WISADAMU

Hope Beyond Probation: A Step Toward Social Reintegration Through WISADAMU

On the 27th of February 2026, the WISADAMU project successfully carried out a meaningful and transformative programme at the Lawris Child Development Centre. This phase was specially designed for female probationers under the age of 18, with the aim of empowering them through legal awareness, emotional engagement, and career development support as they prepare to reintegrate into society. Understanding the sensitive nature of working with probationary children, the programme began with interactive games and activities. These activities were intentionally designed to create a safe, friendly, and non-intimidating environment.

Beyond being icebreakers, the games helped us understand the girls’ emotions, thoughts, and perceptions, particularly how they feel about the general law of Sri Lanka and its relevance to their everyday lives. A female lawyer conducted an informative and sensitive legal awareness session focusing on how general law applies in daily life, with special emphasis on rape and assault-related incidents.

Given the age and vulnerability of the participants, the session was delivered in a compassionate and age-appropriate manner. The girls actively engaged in discussions, asked questions, and shared their views, reflecting a growing awareness of their rights and legal protections. Following the legal session, a career development programme was conducted to help the girls prepare for life after completing their probation and school education. Recognizing their desire to return to normal social life and connect with the professional world, a career development resource person guided them on ,career pathways and future opportunities, confidence-building and self-development and transitioning into the corporate and working world

The girls were also encouraged to openly share their personal challenges and concerns, which were addressed with empathy and guidance. One of the most impactful moments of the programme was a special segment where a young girl who had successfully completed her probation period shared her personal journey with the girls.

Her story of resilience, growth, and transformation deeply inspired the participants. Seeing someone who had faced similar challenges and overcome them gave the girls hope, motivation, and belief in their own potential. At the end of the two sessions, gifts were distributed to the participants as a gesture of encouragement and care. The girls expressed their happiness and shared positive feedback, making the programme a deeply fulfilling experience for everyone involved. This phase of

WISADAMU was conducted in collaboration with Towards Responsive Communities for Social Change, whose support was instrumental in coordinating the programme and obtaining permission from the Child Development Centre. Through legal empowerment, emotional understanding, and career guidance, this initiative continues to create pathways for vulnerable young girls to rebuild their lives with dignity, confidence, and hope.
