Breaking the
Silence, Building Confidence: Project Abhimani’s Journey Towards Menstrual
Dignity
Menstrual health is a fundamental aspect of adolescent well-being, yet it continues to be inadequately addressed within many low-income communities. Limited access to menstrual hygiene products, the absence of proper disposal facilities, and a lack of accurate and culturally appropriate information often create barriers to girls’ health, confidence and uninterrupted education. Addressing these concerns is essential not only for physical well-being, but also for safeguarding dignity, promoting equality and fostering long-term social progress.
Recognising this pressing need, Leo Club of University of Colombo successfully implemented Project Abhimani – Phase 1: Suwarya on 30th January 2026 at Watawala Tamil Maha Vidyalaya. The initiative commenced with a comprehensive menstrual health awareness programme conducted in Tamil by a qualified resource person. Spanning three and a half hours, the session provided students with clear knowledge on menstrual health, hygiene practices, physical changes during menstruation and methods to maintain cleanliness and overall well-being during the menstrual period. An interactive question and answer segment further encouraged open dialogue, allowing students to express concerns, clarify misconceptions and build confidence in a safe and supportive environment.
The active involvement and dedication of Leo members played a pivotal role in the success of the programme, from planning and coordination to facilitating the session and ensuring smooth execution. At the conclusion of the programme, sanitary napkins were distributed to 200 schoolgirls, along with sanitary disposal bins provided to the school, supporting sustainable menstrual hygiene management. Through Suwarya, Project Abhimani reaffirmed its commitment to empowering young girls with knowledge, dignity and the resources needed to face menstruation with confidence and resilience.
