ප්‍රාණ - දිවියට සවියක්

On 21st of October 2026, Leo Club of  University of Colombo took a meaningful step towards addressing food insecurity through the implementation of the first phase of the Project ප්‍රාණ, titled “දිවියට සවියක්”, at the Agrarian Service Center, Padukka.

With a vision of creating sustainable solutions to food insecurity, the initiative focuses on empowering low-income families by introducing practical, sustainable, and income-generating opportunities. Rather than providing only short-term assistance, ප්‍රාණ aims to equip families with the knowledge and skills needed to build a more secure and independent future.

Food insecurity remains a significant challenge for many families, affecting not only access to nutritious food but also economic stability and overall well-being. Sustainable solutions require more than immediate relief;  they require opportunities that enable individuals and families to strengthen their livelihoods. With this understanding, the Project ප්‍රාණ was developed to transform community support into a pathway towards long-term self-reliance.

First phase, “දිවියට සවියක්” focuses on helping low-income families in establishing their own income-generating ventures through mushroom cultivation. By introducing a practical agricultural activity that can be developed into a small-scale business, the initiative seeks to create opportunities for these families to improve their financial stability while contributing to household food security.

Mushroom cultivation was selected as the foundation of this initiative because it offers a potential pathway towards small-scale entrepreneurship. With appropriate knowledge, practical skills, and continued effort, it can provide families with an opportunity to develop a livelihood using manageable cultivation methods.

As part of this initiative, the project seeks to provide the selected families with practical knowledge of mushroom cultivation and entrepreneurship. Guidance on the cultivation process, harvesting, packaging, and marketing is intended to help them understand not only how to grow mushrooms but also how to develop their produce into a sustainable income-generating venture.

The collaboration with the Agrarian Service Center, Padukka, is an important part of this effort. Access to relevant agricultural knowledge and practical guidance can help the beneficiary families develop the confidence and skills necessary to begin their cultivation journey. The initiative highlights the value of collaboration between youth-led service organizations and agricultural institutions in addressing community challenges through sustainable approaches.

However, the true purpose of ප්‍රාණ extends beyond the initial implementation of the project. Its success lies in the ability of the beneficiary families to continue their cultivation activities independently, maintain their ventures, and gradually develop a stable source of income beyond the project’s implementation period. By prioritizing knowledge-sharing and long-term sustainability, the initiative aims to create an impact that continues well beyond the project’s initial activities.

The project also reflects the spirit of Leoism, demonstrating how young people can identify community needs and respond with meaningful, practical solutions. Through teamwork, social responsibility, and collaboration, Leo Club of  University of Colombo seeks to contribute towards a society where communities are empowered to overcome challenges and build a more sustainable future.

Project ප්‍රාණ is envisioned as a two-phase project, with both phases united by the common goal of developing sustainable solutions to food insecurity. The first phase, “දිවියට සවියක්” lays the foundation by focusing on livelihood development through mushroom cultivation, while the broader project aspires to create lasting benefits for the community through continued action.

Ultimately, ප්‍රාණ represents more than a community service initiative. It represents the belief that sustainable change begins when people are given the opportunity, knowledge, and support to build their own futures. By helping families take their first steps towards self-reliance, the project aims to cultivate not only a livelihood but also hope, dignity, and resilience.
