“Nethra” Eye Donation Program (Be Their Vision 6.0 – Phase 02)
Blindness is a major cause of concern around the world today, and it is mostly caused by corneal impairments. Just like any other body organ, the cornea of the eye can also be donated after death, which will give vision to the blind, and these donated eyes are used to restore vision in people suffering from corneal blindness. Most of these impairments are curable, especially through eye donation, which refers to donating one’s eyes after death. The main objective of this phase was to restore vision in people suffering from corneal blindness. Apart from that donors were able to donate tissues and full body parts as well.
These eye donor registration programmes were conducted both online and onsite. The online programme was conducted through google forms, while the onsite programme was conducted on National Eye Donation Day (18th December 2021) at Bellanvila Raja Maha Viharaya from 9am onwards. The main reason behind conducting two programmes online and onsite was that we needed to reach eye donors throughout the country without being restricted to a specific geographical area. The majority of people who signed up as eye donors were grateful for this noble cause of paving the way for them to obtain "upa paarami", because although they wished to donate eyes no information was provided either on the procedure or available opportunities. The Sri Lanka International Eye Bank distributes these donations to other countries as well. Therefore, we, UOC LEOS hope that via this programme we would be able to restore sight of people regardless of nationalities.
