Unveiling the Challenges of Freedom of Expression in Sri Lanka

In a world where communication fuels progress, freedom of expression stands as a pillar of democracy. However, in Sri Lanka, this fundamental right faces numerous challenges, from censorship and legal restrictions to societal pressures that suppress open dialogue. Recognizing the need to address these pressing issues, Project Elicit 2025 embarked on a mission to explore and highlight the obstacles to free speech in the country.

The Journey of Project Elicit 2025

Project Elicit 2025, spearheaded by a dedicated team, focused on gathering valuable insights into the state of freedom of expression in Sri Lanka. Through extensive research, expert discussions, and firsthand accounts, this initiative aimed to create awareness and encourage dialogue on the barriers to free speech, press freedom, and legal limitations that impact individuals and media professionals alike.

The Research Launch Ceremony

On March 26, 2025, Project Elicit 2025 marked a significant milestone with the official launch of its research study at the Faculty of Management, University of Colombo. The event brought together academics, legal experts, students, and advocates who shared their perspectives on the importance of safeguarding freedom of expression.

Key Findings from the Research

The study revealed several key areas where freedom of expression is under threat.

  • Press Freedom and Censorship: Journalists and media houses often face intimidation, restrictions, and legal repercussions for reporting on sensitive topics.

  • Legal Barriers: Existing laws, including defamation laws and restrictions on speech, pose significant challenges to open discussions.

  • Digital Expression: The rise of social media has created new spaces for expression but has also led to increased surveillance and content regulation.

  • Societal Pressures: Cultural and political influences sometimes discourage individuals from speaking freely, particularly on controversial issues.

Impact and Future Directions

The launch of this research is just the beginning. Project Elicit 2025 aims to advocate for policy changes that protect freedom of expression, engage with communities to raise awareness about their rights, and encourage academic and legal discussions to address the barriers to free speech.

A Call to Action

Freedom of expression is more than just a right—it is a responsibility. It is up to us to create a society where diverse voices can be heard without fear. As we move forward, Project Elicit 2025 invites individuals, policymakers, and organizations to join in this movement to protect, promote, and uphold the right to free speech in Sri Lanka.

Let’s work together to ensure that no voice is silenced and no truth is hidden.
