“මතින් තොර හෙටක්” Phase 1

 මතින් තොර හෙටක්” Phase 1

Drug addiction is one of the most prominent social issues in Sri Lanka today, causing a wide range of health and social problems. Due to the harmful effects of this habit, many issues have arisen, particularly in the younger generation as more and more teenagers experiment with different substances. Seeing how important it is to protect our children, Leo Club of University of Colombo organized a project called “මතින් තොර හෙටක්” that consists of three main phases.

As the project's first step, we planned a session to talk about the harmful effects of drugs. The event took place at the Piliyandala, "Senehasa" Rehabilitation Center on December 3, 2023. Mrs. H.A.A.M.C. Amarasinghe, an Assistant External Service (Drug Prevention Treatment Rehabilitation Counseling), Western Province Coordinator, National Dangerous Drag Control Board, served as the session's resource person.

At the "Senehasa" Rehabilitation Center, this session involved over thirty young individuals undergoing rehabilitation.  The resource person gave an overview of drugs and how they are used in Sri Lanka at the beginning. Then she went on to discuss the ways that drug addiction impacts issues with one's own life, family, career, and mental health.  Also, she covered in this session how to avoid these drugs as well as how social media promotes them.  To invigorate the discussion, Mr. Singhe Wickramasinghe, the chairman of the "Senehasa" Rehabilitation Center, also shared a few of his own distressing professional experiences.  The session continued for three hours.

After the session, Leo Rishini Wickramawardena, 2nd vice president of Leo Club of University Colombo, presented gifts to the resource person. Project Chairperson Leo
Kashmira Wijethilaka presented gifts to Mr. Singhe Wickramasinghe, Chairman of "Senehasa" Rehabilitation Center. Three members of the Rehabilitation Center then gave speeches regarding the session and our secretary Leo Isindu Chamikara gave a vote of thanks. After that, we had a great time spending time with the young people undergoing rehabilitation, and they told us what they thought of the session.

Also, we would like to thank all the Club members, the resource person Mrs. H.A.A.M.C. Amarasinghe, Mr. Singhe Wickramasinghe and staff, and the Piliyandala "Senehasa" Rehabilitation Center members, for providing us with this opportunity.
