Bridging the Digital Divide: Empowering Young Minds Through Project උමාත්‍රා

Bringing technology, digital literacy, and new opportunities to students at Yatadola Junior School.

Introduction

In a world where technology continues to shape the way we learn, communicate, and build our futures, access to digital knowledge has become more important than ever. Yet, for many students in under resourced schools, opportunities to explore technology and develop essential digital skills remain limited.

Recognizing this challenge, Project උමාත්‍රා took a meaningful step towards bridging the digital divide through an initiative conducted at Yatadola Junior School on 23rd of October. Beginning at 10:00 a.m., the initiative focused on improving access to technology, introducing students to emerging digital tools, and helping them discover opportunities that digital literacy can create for their future. More than a technology-focused activity, this initiative represented a commitment to making digital education more accessible, inclusive, and meaningful for every student.

Improving Access to Technology

As the first phase of Project උමාත්‍රා, we focused on improving the school's access to digital resources. One of the key activities was the renovation and improvement of the school's computer laboratory to create a better learning environment for students. In addition, we donated a computer to the school to support students in their learning activities and help them gain more practical experience with technology. We believe that access to digital devices is an important step towards creating equal educational opportunities, especially for students in schools with limited technological resources.

Introducing Digital Literacy and Artificial Intelligence

Another major focus of our visit was raising awareness about digital literacy and emerging technologies. We introduced students to the importance of digital skills in today's rapidly changing world and helped them understand how technology can support their education and personal development. We also discussed Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its potential applications in education. Students were introduced to how AI tools can support learning, help them understand difficult concepts, generate ideas, and explore new areas of knowledge.

Our goal was not only to introduce students to these technologies but also to encourage them to use digital tools responsibly, creatively, and effectively in their educational journey.

The central objective of Project උමාත්‍රා is to promote digital literacy and reduce the gap between students who have access to digital opportunities and those who do not. We believe that every student deserves the opportunity to learn about technology, explore emerging digital tools, and develop the skills needed to succeed in the modern world, regardless of their school's available resources. Through computer donations, improvements to digital learning facilities, and awareness sessions on AI,we hope to contribute towards building a more inclusive and digitally empowered learning environment.

Conclusion

The visit to Yatadola Junior School marked a meaningful step in Project උමාත්‍රා’s mission to bridge the digital divide. Through improvements to the computer laboratory, a computer donation, and awareness sessions on Artificial Intelligence, we aimed to introduce students to valuable digital knowledge and new learning opportunities. We believe that digital literacy is more than the ability to use technology; it is about building confidence, expanding knowledge, and creating equal opportunities for every student. Through Project උමාත්‍රා, we hope to inspire young minds to explore technology, continue learning, and prepare for a future shaped by digital innovation.
