Project “නිසාගිනි of Leo Club of University of Colombo undertook the responsibility to make it a continuance project for the fourth consecutive time in this Leoistic year 2020/21. The overall project “නිසාගිනි 4.0” focuses on relieving hunger for any age group in the community, who are facing various nutritional issues in today’s society. Malnutrition remains of serious concern and is considered as an obstacle to socio-economic development in Sri Lanka. The project is being outlined to be compatible with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The project is to be executed in three phases, where the first phase of the project, පළමු කට #The First Bite” has already been conducted on 16th January, 2022 from 6.30 p.m. onwards virtually via Zoom and Facebook Live platforms.

The second phase, “Green Motive” was successfully concluded on 20th March, 2022 at A.E. Gunasinghe Vidyalaya, Colombo. “Green Motive” was organized with the aim of motivating school children in highly urbanized areas to make their own gardens even in smaller scale without restraining to space and other limitations which are possible to overcome. Plus, this gives a chance to those students to enjoy non-contaminated fresh fruits and vegetables within their school premises. Therefore, as an initiative, the project “නිසාගිනි team took the challenge of planting 100+ fruits and vegetable plants in A.E. Gunasinghe Vidyalaya, which is an unprivileged school situated in a highly urbanized area; Pettah, Colombo. With the dedication of the project committee and the immense support of the principal of the school, teachers, Leo members and the students of the school, it was able to landscape the school garden with more than 100 plants of different types of vegetables and fruits. Vice Principal of the school Mrs. J. S. Erusha Fernando and the Director of Education, Central Colombo Mr. K. R. Premathilaka delivered great speeches on the event day, appreciating the effort of Leo members in encouraging school children in gardening and handing over the responsibility of taking proper care of the plants to the children of the school.

The entire project is financially strengthened by Bristol Institute of Business Management (PVT) Ltd, Imperial College of Business Studies, University of the West of England and Dynamic Technologies (PVT) Ltd as the Platinum Sponsors and Net Lanka Engineering Services (PVT) Ltd as the Silver Sponsor. We hope that these children will deliver this positive message to their families as well. As the third phase, we would be distributing 25 dry ration packs to pregnant mothers from selected low-income families as an initiative to create a hunger-free society.
