Project One Drop 4.0
“Individually each one of us is a droplet, together we are the ocean”. Project One Drop 4.0 is based on the category of Water & Energy Conservation, which was implemented by Leo Club of University of Colombo. The entire project consisted of three phases with different objectives and One Drop Team was able to complete the project within five months.
The first phase of the project was planned to provide clean water to the people who use natural waterfalls in order to satisfy their daily usage. So, the team ended up founding a waterfall called ‘Uduwaka Waterfall’ which is in Algama, border areas of the Western and Sabaragamuwa Provinces. It came to know that the area was polluted due to various reasons such as tourism, local individuals who come to visit the place, lack of maintenance, etc. Moreover, it has created a very unpleasant scenario and the children were reluctant to use the place as a playing area. So, our team conducted a well-organized Cleanup Campaign called ‘Pure Wave’ on the 22nd of December 2021 and it was successfully completed with the support and the guidance of hundreds of the Leos.
The
second phase of the project was carried out with the intention of raising awareness of
how water pollution has become an issue of global concern and how it has begun
to affect our lives. The cause for all these pollutions is the lack of
knowledge. So, the targeted audience of this program was the university
students and the school pupils who are prefects, scouts, girl guides, environmental
guides etc. Therefore, the team carried out an Online Awareness Programme called
‘Hydro Wave’ on 7th of February 2022 through Zoom and Facebook with
Mr. Sanath Kithsiri, a Director of Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority, and
Mrs. Dinushi Ranasinghe, a Senior Chemist of Regional Laboratory NWS&DB.
The program included an online quiz competition, drawing competition,
essay writing competition, and several entertainment events. All the winners have been
rewarded with valuable gifts and certificates.
The third phase called ‘Life Wave’ was the most challenging but one of the most successful phases of project One Drop because the time was filled with a number of challenges such as the COVID 19 pandemic and the depth of the economic crisis in the country. But we're glad to announce that The One Drop Team has consisted of critical thinkers and risk-takers. It was brought to attention that the villagers of Diviyagahwela, were having issues with the water supply system for more than 50 years. So ‘Life Wave’ aimed at providing a Water Supply System consisting of an automated tube well and a water tank to Diviyagahwela Village located in Karandeniya, Galle, on the 8th of April 2022. The project was partnered up with five main partners and heartfelt gratitude goes to the reporter Mr. Upul Mahesh De Silva who helped find the project.
The entire project was completed successfully because of the equal contribution of the entire One Drop Team. The sincere gratitude goes to the Chairperson Leo Harini Hettiarachchi, Co-chairperson Leo Visula Hareendra, Secretary Leo Sashmini Anuradha, Assistant Secretary Leo Savindi Liyanage, Treasure Leo Hirani Seneka and Assistant Treasurer Leo Lakshan Gallage. A special thanks goes to the Club President of Leo Club of University of Colombo, Leo Lalalnka Samarakoon for being the backbone of the team. Apart from The One Drop Main Team, there was another sub-team consisting of a number of skillful and committed Leos. We would like to express our sincere gratitude towards each and everyone who contributed to making this project a huge success.
