Alert 6.0 3rd Phase
According to estimates from the IARC Global Cancer Observatory, in 2020 almost 280 000 children and adolescents (aged 0–19 years) were diagnosed with cancer worldwide and almost 110 000 children died from cancer. After 15 years of studying, it is concluded that pediatric cancer incidence rates are increasing in Sri Lanka in parallel with global statistics. Because of major treatment advances in recent decades, 85% of children with cancer now survive 5 years or more. As we are a third-world country, our survival rate is low due to poor economic status. Each pediatric cancer patient needs different medications according to their cancer type. Some medicines are so rare to find. As a government hospital, Maharagama Apeksha Hospital is unable to find all the medicines with the lack of donations these days due to the economic crisis. As our 3rd phase, we donated essential medicines and sanitary items for pediatric children in Maharagama Apeksha Hospital. We collected donations by printing ticket books and laptop stickers as then everyone can join in this charity work.
We broadcast our project on television and radio stations to maximize the audience. On the 9th of April 2023, we donated medicines to all the pediatric wards and gave cleaning items for the kitchen of Maharagama Apeksha Hospital. We donated sanitary items including baby diapers and disposable mask boxes to the ICU unit. We hope that we were able to accelerate their treatment processes and hopefully, it'll pave the way to make pediatric children cancer free one day.
