“මතින් තොර හෙටක්” - Phase 1
In present-day Sri Lanka, Drug addiction is a main social problem. Therefore, many social and health problems occur because of this harmful habit. These days most teenagers are using different types of drugs. To save our young people from this situation Leo Club of the University of Colombo organized a project called “මතින් තොර හෙටක්” which included three phases.
As the 1st phase of this project, we organized a session about drugs and their bad impacts. This session was held on the 25th of April, 2023 at Galle / Pilana Vidyorthodaya National School. The resource person in this session was Senior Police Officer Ms. Dilrukshi Algewaththa.
There were over 175 students in this session who are studying in grades 9, 10, and 11. At first, the resource person introduced what drugs are and how widespread they are in Sri Lanka. Then she explained how drug addiction affects personal life, the family environment, and economic and psychological problems. During this session, she also explained how social media promotes those drugs and how to prevent them. To make the session more active the police officer also shared some of her personal experiences from work. This session was conducted for 2 hours.
After the session, the project chairperson Leo Harshini Erandika presented gifts for the resource person and the deputy principal at Galle / Pilana Vidyorthodaya National School. Then one of the students gave a speech about the session. After that, our project secretary Leo Charuni Nimesha gave the vote of thanks. Then we spent some quality time with those students and they shared their ideas about this session with us.
Finally, we would like to express our gratitude to all the Leo Club members who supported the successful completion of this phase, the resource person Ms. Dilrukshi Algewaththa, the Principal, the academic and non-academic staff, and the students of Galle / Pilana Vidyorthodaya National School.
