Eco Clean Initiative by University of Colombo Leo Club Successfully Completes First Phase. On September 27, 2024, University of Colombo's Leo Club successfully concluded the first phase of its "Eco Clean" initiative, titled "Waste Wise." This project aims to raise awareness about waste management, with a special focus on the importance of plastic recycling among the younger generation. The primary objective of this phase was to educate young people, particularly students, about sustainable practices related to household waste management and to instill a mindset that promotes environmental responsibility.
In partnership with Ingiriya Gamini Vidyalaya's vocational education students, this project sought to target a group with a unique potential to influence future industries. The rationale behind involving these vocational students was to prepare them for roles in industries where sustainable practices, like proper waste management and environmental awareness, are becoming increasingly critical. By equipping these students with knowledge about sustainable practices from an early stage in their career training, the initiative aims to create future professionals who prioritize a healthy and sustainable environment. As part of the "Waste Wise" phase, these vocational students were taken on a field trip to Eco Spindles Private Limited in Horana, a leading Sri Lankan company specializing in plastic recycling and waste management. At Eco Spindles, students learned in-depth about the various stages of plastic recycling, from collecting discarded plastic to cleaning and processing it and eventually turning it into new products.
Beyond merely observing recycling processes, the students gained insights into the career opportunities that could arise from this growing industry. They were introduced to the many job prospects linked to industrial and technical fields, especially those relevant to their vocational training. This knowledge could help guide them toward meaningful employment while simultaneously encouraging them to contribute to a more sustainable future. The field trip also raised awareness about Eco Spindles' broader social and environmental contributions. The company’s efforts in reducing plastic waste and its significant role in the environmental development of Sri Lanka were highlighted, showing the students the far-reaching impacts of plastic recycling.
Looking ahead,Leo Club of University of Colombo plans to expand the Eco Clean initiative with two additional phases. Each phase will continue to focus on increasing awareness and promoting responsible behavior regarding waste management and environmental conservation. The ultimate goal of the Eco Clean initiative is to contribute to a cleaner, greener future for Sri Lanka.
