One Drop 7.0 - Phase 01: Eco Revival!
"Every drop counts, every watt matters."
On October 3rd, 2024, Leo Club of University of Colombo launched the first phase of One Drop 7.0, titled Eco Revival With the theme "Every drop counts, every watt matters," this phase focused on addressing water conservation and reducing pollution, particularly in the environment surrounding the historically significant Thisa Wewa in Anuradhapura. This water body, essential to both locals and visitors, had accumulated waste in its surroundings due to frequent use by devotees, tourists, and residents for bathing and other daily activities. The project aimed to restore the lake’s surrounding environment and promote sustainable practices for the benefit of the community.
The event began at 9:00 a.m., with volunteers from the Leo Club and the local community joining hands to clean the lake’s surroundings. The primary goal was to remove accumulated waste, reduce pollution, and improve the overall environment, contributing to the well-being of the community. However, one of the biggest challenges we faced was the long distance between Colombo and Anuradhapura, which made transportation and program coordination difficult. Despite this, our determination kept us going. To fundraise for the project, we organized sticker and ticket sales, as well as contributions from our members, which provided us with the resources needed to carry out the project.
Beyond the cleanup, the team focused on promoting sustainable practices. Mee trees were planted around the lake, adding natural beauty while enhancing biodiversity. To further encourage responsible behavior, awareness boards were installed in key spots, reminding visitors and residents of the importance of conserving water and protecting the environment. Garbage bins were also strategically placed around the lake to prevent future littering and maintain cleanliness, ensuring the sustainability of Thisa Wewa. The environmental impact of this initiative was significant, as it helped restore the natural balance around the lake, promoted biodiversity, and reduced pollution, benefiting both the ecosystem and the community.
The success of Eco Revival was made possible through the support of various stakeholders. The Municipal Council of Anuradhapura provided essential resources, while S. Shrimal Ponsuge, PHI of the Municipal Council of Anuradhapura, and T.U.K. Basnayaka, Chief Inspector of the Anuradhapura Police Station, actively contributed to the project. At the conclusion of the program, they delivered speeches appreciating the hard work of the volunteers. Additionally, the project chairperson, Leo Dhananji Umayangika, addressed the committee members and resource persons, expressing her gratitude for their efforts in making the project successful. The positive feedback we received from participants and the community reassured us that our efforts were meaningful. The sense of fulfillment we experienced was truly rewarding, as we saw the happiness on the faces of the community members. As we prepare for Phase 2, which will focus on energy conservation, we are excited to continue our journey toward building a sustainable future.
