One Drop 7.0 - Phase 02

One Drop 7.0 | Phase 02: Hands of Hope

"Every drop counts. Every watt matters!"

In the distant lands of Lahugala, Ampara, far from the bustling city of Colombo, where kidney diseases have deeply affected the community due to unsafe water, hope arrived with the second Phase of Project One Drop 7.0. titled "Hands of Hope," this initiative aimed to provide a lasting solution to the water challenges faced by the people in this region. On 26th of December 2024, the Leo Club of University of Colombo proudly extended support to the Divisional Hospital Lahugala, ensuring access to safe and clean drinking water. At the heart of this mission was the donation and installation of a Reverse Osmosis (RO) system, which would remove harmful contaminants from the water.

The event began at 10:00 AM with the hospital staff, including doctors, nurses, and attendants, giving us a warm welcome. Their enthusiasm and support made the day even more meaningful. With the help of a skilled technician, the RO system was successfully installed. The technician tested the water and found a salinity level of 297 mg/L, which is quite high. After the installation of the RO system, this was reduced to just 20 mg/L, making the water safe to drink. This improvement highlighted how technology can solve real-world problems.

The Divisional Hospital Lahugala, serving nearly 19,000 patients annually, will now benefit from this improved water quality, ensuring better health for the community. After completing the setup, we had refreshments with the hospital staff, enjoying a moment of teamwork and fulfillment. The event ended with heartfelt speeches that reflected the spirit of the project. Dr. H.K.W. Devindi, the Medical Officer in Charge of the Divisional Hospital Lahugala, expressed her sincere gratitude for the support. Project Chairperson Dhananji Umayangika also spoke, expressing her appreciation for her committee members and the hospital staff.

“Hands of Hope” is a symbol of what can be achieved when compassion and innovation come together. It’s not just about clean water; it’s about hope and better living conditions for the people of Lahugala, a community so far from Colombo yet so deserving of our support. Each drop of purified water is a reminder of the project’s message: “Every drop counts. Every watt matters.” The journey of One Drop 7.0 continues, bringing hope and sustainability to those who need it most. Together, we look forward to making even more positive changes.
