MATHIN THORA HETAK – Phase 2: AWAREX 🚭
The journey toward a drug-free future continues with Phase 2 of the "මතින් තොර හෙටක්" project, focusing on raising awareness about the dangers of smoking and drug use in public spaces, especially within public transport systems. On 28th December 2024, our dedicated team engaged with bus drivers, conductors, and passengers at Moratuwa Bus Station. Through meaningful interactions, we gathered valuable feedback on the challenges faced regarding smoking and drug use in public transport. This input highlighted the pressing need for initiatives like AWAREX to promote safer and healthier environments for everyone.
Our campaign was strengthened by the invaluable contributions of Officer-in-Charge (OIC) Moratuwa Police Station , whose expertise guided our efforts. In addition, a Police Officer of Moratuwa Police Station joined us, sharing his knowledge of the legal aspects of smoking and drug use in public spaces. Their insights educated the community on the importance of following the law to ensure public health and safety. The involvement of these law enforcement officers reinforced the urgency of addressing these issues. Additionally, the support of Leo Damith Kaushalya, President of Leo Club of University of Colombo (UOC), brought credibility to the campaign, showcasing the power of youth leadership and community collaboration in driving positive change.
As part of AWAREX, we placed 200 awareness stickers on public buses and 200 awareness stickers on public places, ensuring the message of keeping public transport smoke- and drug-free reached a wide audience. Strategically placed on bus windows, these stickers served as constant reminders to passengers and drivers about the importance of maintaining a clean and safe environment. The positive feedback from passengers and bus staff reflected the campaign’s success, with many expressing their appreciation for the initiative and its meaningful impact.
This phase of the campaign was a testament to the power of teamwork, education, and collaboration. By working closely with public transport workers, law enforcement officers, and the Leo Club of UOC, we amplified our message and reached more people. Through AWAREX, we are not just raising awareness but driving change, striving for a future where public transport systems are free from the harmful effects of smoking and drug abuse. Together, we can create healthier and safer public spaces for all.
