Nisagini 7.0 - Phase 01

The නිසාගිනි 𝟳.0 project was implemented with the aim of "Minimizing post-harvest damage" which is common in Sri Lanka. The main objective of this is to promote food safety. Post-harvest damages are about 5% in developed countries and 30% to 40% in agriculturally prosperous Sri Lanka. This project phase named " පසු අස්වනු සුරක්ෂා " was implemented on January 14, 2025 with the aim of reducing the post-harvest damage. A farmer's association in Bulugahapitiya, Rikillagaskada, Nuwara Eliya was selected for the project. At the heart of this mission was to provide useful equipment to the selected farmers' association to reduce the damage caused during the transportation of the post-harvest and to give a lecture on the protection of the post-harvest together with the National Institute of Post-Harvest Management.

The event began at 12:00 PM with the farmers, giving us a warm welcome. Their enthusiasm and support made the day even more meaningful. First, Mr. Rasika Polgahapitiya, an agricultural consultant in the Bulugaha Pitiya area and Mrs. Lakmini Seneviratne of the post-harvest management institute delivered the relevant knowledge. There they explained many important things like strategies to be adopted to reduce post-harvest damage. After that, the members of the farmers association were also given an opportunity to comment. After that, the members of the Farmers Association were given equipment to help reduce post-harvests. At that happy moment, they enjoyed that moment together with us. After that, the treatment given by them was enjoyed by the members of the farmers association, the members of the National Institute of Post Harvesting Management Committee, and our Leo members. Finally, after a productive conversation and encouragement, we left the Bulugahapitiya area.

Post-harvest damage affects not only farmers but also consumers and traders. Here food is wasted in a big way, and the consumer has to pay about 30% more than the price he should pay when buying from the food market. Because when the retailer sells the damaged crop, he has to cover the cost from the farmer or the wholesaler, remove the damaged crops and sell the undamaged crops at a higher price. As an incentive to reduce that problem, we implemented the project. Due to the reduction of post-harvest damage, the farmers' income increases annually, and the reduction in the amount of wasted crops brings a great benefit and relief to both the trader and the consumer.

We aim to continue the නිසාගිනි 7.0 journey, bringing hope and sustainability to those who need it most. Together, we look forward to making even more positive changes. Join us in celebrating and supporting such optimistic things.
