The Leo Club of the University of Colombo embarked on a remarkable journey with Arogya 8.0 – FoodFit, a project aimed at promoting better nutrition and raising awareness about food-related health risks. The first phase of this inspiring initiative took place on March 6, 2024, at the Mandawa premises, where students, faculty members, and university staff came together to embrace the power of healthy living. The event kicked off at 9:00 a.m. with an engaging and informative session by Dr. Thushara Poojitha Jayasekara from Helasuwaya Hospital. He captivated the audience with his insights on how university students can maintain a balanced diet while navigating their academic life. His session served as a wake-up call, reminding everyone that good nutrition is the foundation of a healthier future.

Following the insightful discussion, the project moved into its second phase—an interactive health assessment designed to evaluate the nutritional status of the university community. This initiative reached beyond just students, including lecturers, non-academic staff, and even cleaning personnel. Each participant had their Body Mass Index (BMI) measured to identify cases of obesity and malnutrition. Those requiring medical attention were directed to Buddhiha Crishan, a fourth-year medical undergraduate from the Faculty of Medicine, who provided guidance on how to improve their health through dietary and lifestyle adjustments. This hands-on approach ensured that every individual received personalized support, reinforcing the project’s core mission of making nutritional health accessible to all.

As a token of care and encouragement, the project team distributed fruit baskets to individuals with obesity, while those struggling with malnutrition were provided with nutritious lunch packets to help them regain their health. To further promote Sri Lanka’s rich food heritage, all participants were treated to a special porridge made from traditional rice varieties, offering a delicious yet wholesome experience. The event was further enriched by a collaboration with representatives from Helasuwaya Hospital, who set up a stall featuring a variety of Ayurvedic rice and other natural food products, allowing attendees to explore healthier dietary choices firsthand.

With its first phase successfully concluded, Arogya 8.0 – FoodFit proved to be more than just a health awareness project—it was a movement towards sustainable well-being. By combining education, medical support, and practical solutions, the initiative empowered individuals to take charge of their nutrition and embrace a healthier lifestyle. As the journey continues, this project serves as a beacon of inspiration, proving that small, mindful steps can lead to a healthier, happier society.
