Sindu Nala Raksha - Phase 2
The second phase of project "Sindu Nala Raksha" was successfully completed on 13th of January 2021, as a campaign of mangrove replantation. In an era of higher mangrove pollution & destruction, the need of mangrove conservation was identified by the Leo Club of University of Colombo & was set as the main focus of the second phase of project Sindu Nala Raksha.
The main objective of this phase of the project was to strengthen the protection of mangrove ecosystems, as mangrove ecosystems play an important role providing habitats for hundreds of species and also helping to protect the shorelines from erosion. Although the mangroves are very important for the existence of the earth, the society does not pay enough attention to protect and improve the mangrove ecosystems.
In order to uplift the protection of dying and destroying mangroves and to improve this valuable ecosystem, a mangrove replantation was done by the Leo Club of University of Colombo, in the Udappuwa lagoon. The participation of the Leos, the remarkable contribution of the Arachchikattuwa Pradeshiya Sabha and the villagers of Udappuwa area were very much helpful to make this replantation campaign a success!
We hope this important step in protecting the mangrove ecosystems will be very valuable and more beneficial in the future, as these plants will grow upto a huge mangrove forest and will provide habitats for thousands of beautiful species.
