Helping Hands – Project Sahurda Yathra 2.0 - Phase 01
“Sahurda Yathra 2.0” is one of the significant projects organized by Leo Club of University of Colombo for the second consecutive time, under the category of helping hand to differently-abled, consisting of three phases with the prime purpose of encouraging people with disabilities to start their own business or a job to improve their living standards and to improve their physical and mental health.
As humans, they do not want our pity or an awkward avoidance. They just want to be treated like we would treat anyone else; they have little hope of going to school, getting a job, having their own home, socializing, or voting. But people with disabilities in society may experience adverse socio-economic benefits such as lower education, lower employment rates, and higher poverty rates due to social isolation. This is a time to make the society discrimination-free and a place where those souls have the right to live like all others. That’s why Leo Club of University of Colombo conducted the first phase of “Sahurda Yathra 2.0” to increase employment opportunities for people with disabilities and change the mindset of people with disabilities who have negative attitudes towards their lives. The project committee achieved this objective by conducting a series of videos, including four episodes, released in the first four weeks of January 2021. The video series featured four people with various disabilities who have won their lives, and they sent a message to the community about the obstacles they faced and how they overcame those.
Ultimately, the project was successfully completed with the participation of many parties to achieve the phase objective of increasing employment opportunities for people with disabilities and changing the mindset of people with disabilities. Special thank goes to Mr. Upul Sanjaya, who serves as an Assistant Director of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, Mr. Opal Samaradiwakara, owner of a self-employment business of broom making, Mr. Tikiri Kumara who is a development officer of the Election Commission of Sri Lanka, and Mr. Suranga Rajapaksa who works as a marketing consultant for the Best Life International (Pvt) Ltd. Also, would like to thank those who donated monetary and other materials, project committee members, and all the club members.
