Helping Hands – Project Sahurda Yathra 2.0- Phase 02
“Sahurda Yathra 2.0” is one of the significant projects organized by Leo Club of University of Colombo for the second consecutive time, under the category of helping hand to differently-abled, consisting of three phases with the prime purpose of encouraging people with disabilities to start their own business or a job to improve their living standards and to improve their physical and mental health.
People with disabilities need our help and it is our duty to help them to stand up for improvements in their lives. Therefore as the second phase of Sahurda Yathra 2.0, Leo Club of University of Colombo conducted a medical check-up program for physically, mentally and sensory disabled people who live in Sujatha Elder’s Home, Kalutara North, on 29th of January 2021 from 9.00 a.m. onwards. This home primarily take-care of 81 people under several age groups with various disabilities like Down syndrome, Autism, and other physical and mental disorders. Leo Club of University of Colombo conducted this medical camp to diagnose those disabled persons’ diseases and refer them for treatments. Also, it was donated liquid hand sanitizers and essential medicines are frequently required by disabled people.
Ultimately, fulfilling the phase objective, to provide medical treatments and mental health awareness for differently-abled, this program was successfully concluded with the contribution of many parties. Special thank goes to Dr. Nath Samarathunga, a Psychiatry Medical Officer of the Mental Ward in General Hospital Kalutara, Counseling officer Dilmi Hettiarachchi, and the nursing staff including Mr. Priyanga for the immense support given on this program. Also would like to thank everyone who donated monetary and other materials, project committee members, and all the club members. The care-takers of Sujatha Elder’s Home were very much thankful for Leo club of University of Colombo on this valuable program.
