“Building Bridges Through Language: Inspiring Journey with LanguageLink”

In a world that thrives on communication, language often becomes a barrier. To address this, Leo Club of University of Colombo organized "LanguageLink," a unique initiative aimed at enhancing English language skills among students at WP/Minu/Wigoda Maha Vidyalaya. This interactive session, held on November 12, 2024, was part of a larger vision to promote community unity by reducing language barriers. Phase One of the initiative included an English teaching workshop designed to meet the language proficiency levels of students in various grades. The Leo Club aimed to create a comfortable, supportive environment for English learning by organising distinct programmes for students in grades 1-5 and 6-11.

The session commenced with a traditional oil lamp lighting ceremony, which was followed by a welcome speech of the Principal of WP/Minu/Wigoda Maha Vidyalaya. The opening ceremony then continued with a speech by the Project Chairperson, Leo Nethmini Rathnayake, while English activity tutorials and learning materials were distributed. Lecturers from the British Way English Academy in Nittambuwa collaborated with Prarthana 7.0 to design sessions that would appeal to students in both primary and secondary grades, incorporating fun and educational activities. For primary students, project members created a "Activity Room" equipped with learning aids such as books and Scrabble boards to engage them in interactive learning. Each primary student received a pencil, and secondary students received pens as small tokens of encouragement for their learning journey.

Throughout the day, students actively participated in interactive activities and games, demonstrating a strong desire to improve their language skills. To ensure that the lessons continued beyond the workshop, English activity sheets were distributed to students to help them practice developing their English communication skills. The workshop concluded with snacks and refreshments, allowing students to unwind and socialise while gaining confidence in their English skills. Feedback from students and teachers reflected their enthusiasm, with many expressing a desire for additional opportunities to improve their English communication skills. The positive response reflected the workshop's impact and the students' eagerness to learn.

The success of "LanguageLink" was made possible by the essential cooperation of different stakeholders, including the school's principal, instructors from British Way English Academy, teachers and parents, and members of the project committee, all of whom contributed to the event's seamless operation. At the end of the programme, the Project Secretary, Leo Saduni Tharushika, expressed deep gratitude to the committee members and resource personnel for their focused efforts. Seeing the delight and passion on the children's faces gave the Leo Club members a tremendous sense of fulfilment, and many students even invited us back for extra sessions. Energised by their success, the team is now planning Phase Two of Prarthana 7.0, a cultural festival developed for children orphanage that promises to provide fresh possibilities for connection and celebration.
