Miles of Smiles 6.0 - First Phase
The "Miles of Smiles" project, initiated by the Leo Club of the University of Colombo, aims to bring joy, education, and empowerment to young children, fostering their growth and aspirations for a brighter future. The first phase, titled "Journey to Touch the Moon," was a testament to the club's dedication to helping the younger generation build their dreams, nurturing the skills, confidence, and imagination they need to eventually lead society. This event was held on the 8th of November 2024 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The choice of locations—the Katunayake Airport, the Colombo Planetarium, and Viharamahadevi Park—was strategic, providing the children with exposure to science, nature, and the possibilities of a future beyond what they might typically envision. The visit to Katunayake Airport provided a practical glimpse into aviation and travel, sparking their curiosity as they investigated the creation of global connections and the career prospects in this field. At the Colombo Planetarium, the children were introduced to the wonders of space and astronomy, allowing them to dream of reaching for the stars and fostering a new understanding of science and technology. The visit to Viharamahadevi Park complemented these experiences, offering relaxation, recreational activities, and environmental education.
The values of the "Miles of Smiles" project are rooted in compassion, empowerment, and community engagement. The "Miles of Smiles" project supports sustainable development by promoting quality education (SDG 4), reducing inequalities (SDG 10), and fostering partnerships (SDG 17). Through engaging experiences at Katunayake Airport, Colombo Planetarium, and Viharamahadevi Park, the initiative encourages curiosity and scientific learning, empowering children from diverse backgrounds with equal opportunities. By uniting university students, communities, and sponsors, the project not only uplifts young lives but also contributes to building a more equitable and sustainable future.
The overwhelming support and engagement we received from our volunteers and sponsors also underscored the community’s shared commitment to uplifting young lives. By uniting for this cause, the Leo Club members demonstrated the impact that a compassionate, collective effort can have. The success of the first phase of the "Miles of Smiles" project proves that small, thoughtful actions can indeed make a lasting difference, turning dreams into achievable goals and creating memories that the children will carry forward as they journey toward their future.
