Eyes of Hope
Eyes of Hope
Eyes of Hope was born from the heart. It began with a quiet realization that sight is not something everyone is blessed with, yet hope is something we can all give. Categorized under the Best Project for Vision, this initiative grew from empathy, responsibility, and a deep desire to serve with purpose. The first phase, “දෑසේ පැතුම” was more than a project phase. It was a moment where intention turned into action. Chairing this project under the Leo Club of the University of Colombo, I felt not like a leader standing above, but a learner standing among humanity witnessing how small acts of kindness can create lasting light.
The first session of දෑසේ පැතුම unfolded within the calm embrace of two sacred temples, where faith met selflessness. On 3rd January (Poya Day) at Gangaramaya Temple, Colombo and again on 11th January at Kelaniya Rajamaha Viharaya something extraordinary happened. Amid prayers, incense, and silence over 150 buddhist devotees and monks alike chose to give sight beyond their lifetime by filling eye donate promising forms for the Eye Bank. Watching trembling hands sign those forms was overwhelming. In those moments, it felt as if light itself was being passed forward, silently, lovingly, without expectation. The second session brought the project closer to the ground, closer to real lives. On 17th January, at the Seeduwa Sri Lanka Welfare Society of the Blind, we met individuals whose daily journeys are guided not by sight, but by courage. We learned that many blind individuals cannot travel long distances just to receive a simple white cane an object the world often overlooks, yet one that means freedom to them. Listening to this reality was humbling. So we brought the support to them. As white canes were placed into waiting hands, there were no grand speeches only quiet smiles, gratitude filled eyes, and moments that spoke louder than words. The remaining white canes will be thoughtfully distributed by the President of the Seeduwa Welfare Society of the Blind during their upcoming meetings, ensuring that no need goes unanswered and no individual is left behind. Each cane became a promise you are seen; you are supported, you are not alone.
දෑසේ පැතුම was carried forward with countless blessings, unseen efforts, and hearts that chose kindness. These days were not measured by numbers or sessions, but by emotions by the warmth felt in temple corridors by the weight of a white cane held for the first time, by the shared silence that said everything. Eyes of Hope has only taken its first steps, yet those steps were firm, compassionate and full of purpose. This phase was not merely the beginning of a project. It was the beginning of a journey to keep hope alive, one life, one light, one path at a time.
