Phase 02 Ahinsa
Leo Club of University of Colombo successfully carried out Phase 02 of Project Sobadhara, titled “Ahinsa”, on 18th January 2026 at Kurunegala, commencing at 9.00 a.m. This phase focused on improving the wellbeing of stray and abandoned dogs through medical care, shelter support, and awareness on responsible animal welfare practices.
This meaningful initiative was designed to protect vulnerable dogs while encouraging compassion, responsibility, and sustainable solutions for stray dog management within the community.
Stray dogs are exposed to numerous risks, including diseases, lack of shelter, malnutrition, and neglect. Many of these dogs suffer due to the absence of timely vaccinations and proper medical attention, which also poses health risks to humans. Recognizing the growing need for structured dog welfare interventions, Leo Club of University of Colombo selected stray dog care as a key focus area under Project Sobadhara.
Moving beyond sympathy into action,
the club aimed to directly contribute to dog wellbeing by addressing healthcare
needs, promoting safe shelter options, and raising awareness on common dog
illnesses and preventive care.
Activities Carried Out
Phase 02 “Ahinsa” included a series of impactful activities carried out with the active participation of Leo members. A vaccination programmed was successfully conducted under the supervision of Dr. Malinga, during which 50 stray dogs were vaccinated in the vicinity of the Sundarapola garbage dump site, ensuring protection against common and life-threatening diseases and contributing to improved public and animal health.
The project involved feeding sessions, the donation of dry rations and essential supplies, and spending quality time with the dogs at the Baw Baw Welfare shelter to improve their well-being and socialization.
Awareness Programme.
An awareness session on dog illnesses and proper care was conducted as a key component of this phase by Dr. Tharindu Wijekoon. The session focused on identifying common diseases among stray dogs, the importance of timely vaccinations, hygienic practices, and responsible treatment methods. This programme significantly enhanced participants’ understanding of dog welfare and encouraged responsible behavior towards dogs within the community.
Impact of the Project
Through this phase, Leo members gained hands-on experience in teamwork, leadership, and community service while developing empathy and social responsibility. The project created a meaningful impact by improving dog health, promoting responsible sheltering and adoption, and increasing awareness on humane treatment and disease prevention.
Conclusion
Leo Club of University of Colombo extends its sincere gratitude to the Baw Baw Animal Welfare Centre, Dr. Tharindu Wijekoon, Dr. Malinga and Mr. Gihan Dinushka, as well as to all members and supporters who contributed to the success of Phase 02. Project Sobadhara - Ahinsa stands as a testament to the club’s commitment to protecting all forms of life and fostering a compassionate and sustainable society.
