Miles of Smiles 4.0 As Mother Teresa said, “It’s not about how much you do, but how much love you put into what you do that counts.” Volunteering is a wonderful way to give back good service to the community. Researchers demonstrate that they have positive effects on people of all ages by boosting emotions of self-worth, social connection, and well-being. See what you may do to assist any friends or neighbours who are now having difficulties. Children are valuable gifts given by God to the world. They are like flowers. They have a lot of dreams and their parents help to shade their dreams. Unfortunately, all children do not have their parents to paint their dreams in shade. As Leos, we thought we can support those children to shade their dreams. That little thought inspired us and we started to help the children to paint their dreams with wonderful colours. That was the first phase of our project. There were two segments of our project. As the first segment, we selected the Mawpiya Se

What became of the Dollar? Today, the economy of our country is an important topic. When talking about the economy these days, the first thing that comes to mind is the ‘dollar.’ Everyone knows about the situation with the dollar in Sri Lanka. The economy and the dollar are two things that are inextricably linked. The value of the dollar is a crucial element in this context of import, export, income, expenditure, and debt. The rise and fall of the dollar value is a normal economic phenomenon. But the sudden decrease in the dollar, which was continuously rising, is a significant situation. This situation is widely discussed among analysts. What could actually be the reason for this? Analysts present various types of reasons related to this. Let's talk about some of them. They say that the new income tax policy imposed by the government has led to a change in the dollar. Due to the imposition of income tax, the amount of money to be spent on household goods and services decreases to

PROJECT NISAGINI 5.0 – PHASE 2 "සාරභූමි" second phase of the project NISAGINI 5.0 was making a school garden with 150+ fruits and vegetables and donating working equipment to maintain the school garden properly. It was intended to encourage the growing of vegetables and fruits in order to promote self-sufficiency, as well as to create gardens in such a way that less fortunate people could benefit from the harvest. Most of the people are not aware of hunger and malnutrition, and they are not used to living a healthy lifestyle. When the current economic crisis is considered, lack of knowledge on nutrition and self-cultivation, time restraints, and competing interests have made people demotivate towards green environments and pushed away many attempts to promote gardening. Hence, there is a risk of food scarcity in the near future, and food supply is also at risk, resulting in a rapid increase in consumer prices, including for vegetables and fruits. By considering the specific

Project Manusath Viyamana Phase 01 "There must be a better way to make the things we want, a way that doesn’t spoil the sky, or the rain or the land.” - Paul McCartney. Sustainable Development Goals are currently the center of attention for the entire world. In Sri Lanka, numerous initiatives are being carried out to meet sustainable development targets by 2030. The project "Manusath Viyamana 23 initiative" was developed by the Leo Club of the University of Colombo as a further step toward accomplishing sustainable development objectives. The Sustainable Development Goals are directly relevant to the Manusath Wiyamana initiative. The primary goal of this project is to lay the groundwork needed to improve the standard of living for those living in the rural districts of Sri Lanka. This undertaking was carried out in three stages. Good sanitary conditions are one of the most important basic needs that must be fulfilled by all humans. A survey done in 2013 found that more t

Alert 6.0 1st phase "සිහින ගෙත්තම්" The "Alert 6.0" of the Leo Club of the University of Colombo is one of the major remarkable events organized by the club in every Leoistic year. Children battling with cancer need love and affection more than normal children need. We chose to carry out this project in the Apeksha Hospital Maharagama, where a large number of pediatric cancer patients are being treated from around the country. This phase was conducted in two parts. In each part, we aimed to make all the patients and their carers physically and mentally benefit from this project. In the 1st part on 23rd of December 2022, we gave a meal to pediatric children, their carers, and the ward staff who were in the Apeksha Hospital Maharagama. Altogether, we gave a meal to around 135 people. We think the nutrients in the food will boost their healing process. In the evening, we conducted an amazing entertainment event along with the Christmas vibes with the little flowers in

This project was initiated by aiming environmental conservation, spreading awareness of Sri Lankan community and taking prevention action towards global warming for the public. The first phase was conducted through social media platforms. We could reach large number of audience through social media platforms. Large number of audience took hand with the project by sending us photographs of planting trees and they shared their thoughts about the importance of tree planting thereby inviting others to take hand with the project as well. We were able to motivate people to plant trees through the social media campaign and to create awareness among the society. When considering todays society people live according to a tight schedule and they do not have enough time to move with the environment. But they always stay connected with social media and they foll

දියණි 6.0 – “දැයේ දියණියන් උදෙසා” දෙවන අදියර - ලිය වරුණා “වතුකරයේ කුසුම්වලට සුවඳ දෙන්න” Shabana Azmi once said women's health is not a niche issue - it impacts everyone in some way. That is why a collective effort to improve awareness and understanding of menstrual hygiene is key to closing the gender health gap. Inadequate access to menstrual hygiene and education, or period poverty, is an issue equally affecting women across both rural and urban settings. Inaccessibility to low-cost feminine hygiene products, lack of infrastructure to address these specific needs, and unavailability of effective educational tools to teach menstrual hygiene, are some of the major issues women and girls deal with on a regular basis in relation to period poverty in Sri Lanka. Social and health indicators of the estate sector are very poor compared to the national figures, which has made this community a vulnerable population in Sri Lanka. The majority of tea pluckers in plantations are females. Si

“Thirasara 4.0” - “ දිරිමත් මිනිසුන් සවිමත් කරන්නට ” When it comes to the unemployment and lower income level rate in Sri Lanka, there is a significant impact on each individual's life because of the current situation . They are struggling a lot to survive every day. Orson Scott Card once said, “Unemployment is capitalism's way of getting you to plant a garden.” As Leos, due to such economic setbacks in the country, we are aiming to overcome the deficiencies of unemployed or low-income families and direct them to a path of employment or self-employment to bring about a revival and raise them above where they are. Our project "Thirasara 4.0", is based on uplifting the lives of poor family units by creating a way of self employment for them. Therefore we introduced beekeeping as a self-sourced income opportunity. This project was commenced and completed on 11th March 2023 at Udatenna, Balangoda, which is located in the Rathnapura district. In this project, we provided a

ALPHABETZ (Phase 04) – "Learn Today for a Better Tomorrow" Kofi Annan says knowledge is power and information is liberating. Information is the premise of progress in every society and in every family. Speaking of knowledge, English knowledge is an indispensable tool for today's world. This is primarily because the present framework for English and literacy promotes the growth of critical and creative thinking as well as the interpersonal, collaborative, and personal skills that are crucial in both personal and professional environments. Due to some social and economic problems that have arisen in Sri Lanka in the past, the opportunities for children with economic difficulties to develop such language skills are very low. As social activists, we at LEO are ready to find as many solutions as possible to such problems. We as the Leo Club of University of Colombo, have selected G/Halpatota Roman Catholic Junior School, Baddegama for this action, where children with economic

The COVID-19 pandemic and the financial crisis that Sri Lanka is suffering from, have had a profound impact on both physical and mental health, particularly for young people. Speaking of the university students of Sri Lanka, COVID-19 pandemic and the resultant financial crisis in the country affected their education, and the mental. Almost two years of their university life was spent in a remote manner due to the pandemic. Project Arogya – Phase 01 Health is the state of complete physical, mental and spiritual well-being and it is really important for all of us. This is usually understood as an individual right and a right of the entire community. Project Arogya comes under the category of health and nutrition. This project focuses more on the people that do not have sufficient resources which are necessary to protect and improve their health and safety. Some of our objectives are offering children a healthy meal to increase their immunization, Ensuring the health and safety of society reducing the malnutrition of children. As the first phase of the project Arogya, we decided to donate some nutrition packs to an underprivileged children’s orphanage as it is necessary for them to have fresh produce that is essential for keeping them healthy. We found a children’s orphanage which was looking for a hand regarding nutritious meals for their children. We were able to make it happen at the Gangodawila Girl
