PROJECT NISAGINI 5.0 – PHASE 2
"සාරභූමි" second phase of the project NISAGINI 5.0 was making a school garden with 150+ fruits and vegetables and donating working equipment to maintain the school garden properly. It was intended to encourage the growing of vegetables and fruits in order to promote self-sufficiency, as well as to create gardens in such a way that less fortunate people could benefit from the harvest. Most of the people are not aware of hunger and malnutrition, and they are not used to living a healthy lifestyle. When the current economic crisis is considered, lack of knowledge on nutrition and self-cultivation, time restraints, and competing interests have made people demotivate towards green environments and pushed away many attempts to promote gardening. Hence, there is a risk of food scarcity in the near future, and food supply is also at risk, resulting in a rapid increase in consumer prices, including for vegetables and fruits. By considering the specific needs and perspectives of different age groups it was identified that teenagers are the best age category to be influenced by positive vibes towards gardening and green environmental aspects. It is very important for the future of the country to be healthy and to eat nutritious food.
Therefore, "සාරභූමි" was successfully completed at Wp/Mt/ Omatta Kanishta Vidyalaya, Omatta, Agalawatta benefiting students with the knowledge and experience of planting and giving them the responsibility of nourishing, looking after and driving for future achievement by allowing them to reap their harvest, and feel the taste of chemical-free nutritious vegetables and fruits. They were encouraged to make their own gardens even on a smaller scale, with regard to space or other limitations which are possible to overcome while enjoying non-contaminated fresh fruits and vegetables within their school premises. We received very positive and appreciative feedback from the school's principal, teachers, and participants. "සාරභූමි" was able to make a positive impact on the expected community by covering them in the required areas of implementing the project's second phase.
