Alert 6.0 1st phase "සිහින ගෙත්තම්"

The "Alert 6.0" of the Leo Club of the University of Colombo is one of the major remarkable events organized by the club in every Leoistic year. Children battling with cancer need love and affection more than normal children need. We chose to carry out this project in the Apeksha Hospital Maharagama, where a large number of pediatric cancer patients are being treated from around the country.

This phase was conducted in two parts. In each part, we aimed to make all the patients and their carers physically and mentally benefit from this project. In the 1st part on 23rd of December 2022, we gave a meal to pediatric children, their carers, and the ward staff who were in the Apeksha Hospital Maharagama. Altogether, we gave a meal to around 135 people. We think the nutrients in the food will boost their healing process. In the evening, we conducted an amazing entertainment event along with the Christmas vibes with the little flowers in CCC house Maharagama. Distributing gifts by the Santa Clause was a heart-melting event. They were extremely happy and sang songs with us. The heart-melting compliments from the carers were wholesome. Since there is economic inflation in our country, the essential items are not enough to treat everyone in the hospital. Therefore, as the 2nd part of the first phase, we distributed the essential items to the pediatric patients who were residing for treatments in Apeksha Hospital Maharagama.

As there are many Leo clubs distributed throughout the country, we were able to collect essential items from all around the country which were requested by the doctors. 146 packages of essential items were given to each child who was staying there for treatments. Every package includes napkins, masks, baby cream, baby cologne, biscuits, soap, and toothpaste.

As pediatric patients are from all over the country, some patients were unable to go home even once a month. Therefore, the distribution of essential supplies was so much for them as they were unable to buy their essential items with the money they had. We covered all the wards with pediatric patients in the Apeksha Hospital Maharagama, including the ICU. Their parents were so thankful for the gifts. Even though we distributed the packages for inpatients, we gave the redundant packages to pediatric patients who were there only to get their injections. It was so nice to see the smiling faces of pediatric patients when they were getting their packages.
