“MATHIN THORA HETAK”
Phase 1 – Motivation and Leadership
Program for Rehabilitators
The Leo Club of the University of Colombo proudly launched “Mathin Thora Hetak” a powerful initiative born out of compassion and responsibility, aimed at addressing one of Sri Lanka’s most pressing challenges, drug abuse. This project goes beyond mere awareness. It’s a mission of healing, reintegration, and hope, focused on uplifting lives shattered by addiction and helping individuals rediscover their place in society. By providing positive motivation to society and enhancing their mental strength, a possible solution can be found for the drug menace.
To carry out the 1st phase of Project Mathin Thora Hetak, under the theme of “Nisansalata Nawodayak”, we selected the Nisansala Rehabilitation Center located on Gampaha Waturugama Road. On December 10, 2025, under the guidance of Ms. Dulshani Mahanama, who came representing the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board, steps were taken to conduct a motivation and leadership program for the rehabilitators at Nisansala Rehabilitation Center. On this occasion, to motivate them, several activities were conducted alongside a lecture, ensuring their full engagement. During this, Ms. Dulshani Mahanama provided training to the rehabilitators on the leadership skills they need to develop for their reintegration into society.
During this program, we also held a music session for them. It felt to us as though the music session touched their hearts like rain falling on dry land, bringing comfort, joy, and a sense of renewal. Music has a way of touching hearts and minds like nothing else can. We also shared refreshments, adding a touch of warmth and hospitality to the day.
Furthermore, at the Nisansala rehabilitation center, the rehabilitators maintain a vegetable and fruit garden to meet their daily requirement. As a form of support, we took steps to provide them with several types of seeds and plants. This can be seen as another important step in our 1st Phase. Here, we focused on providing as much support as possible, as members of the Leo Club, to help them establish their mental and economic activities sustainably.
In this way, we were able to successfully complete the first phase of the Mathin Thora Hetak project. With heartfelt feedback from the center’s management, the rehabilitators, and our resource person, we are proud to say Phase 1 of “Mathin Thora Hetak” was a resounding success.
