Project Safe Steps - Phase 01

  Safe Steps Project

                           "දැනුම්වත් හෙටක්"

On the 22nd of November 2025, from 2.00 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. Leo Club of University of Colombo successfully completed the first phase of the Safe Step Project "දැනුම්වත් හෙටක්" at Handford Estate, Deniyaya.

Staying true to our mission of safeguarding communities, this phase focused on crime and accident prevention, especially for most of Tamil families living in remote and challenging conditions. Many of these community members have limited awareness about crime, legal protection, and the steps to take when they become victims of the crimes. Understanding this gap, our first phase was designed to give them awareness about identifying crimes, seeking help, preventing victimization. Along with awareness, we provided safety equipment and first aid materials, ensuring practical support that directly improves their safety in their day today life.

On the project day a small gathering was held before commencing the sessions.

The Senior Estate Manager, together with his staff members, attended the event and warmly welcomed our team. The Deniyaya Sub-Inspector of Police, Mr. Pushpakumara, along with Mr. Kethujan also joined with our session, extending their support and encouragement. After we explained the purpose of the phase, the Senior Estate Manager addressed the estate workers, emphasizing the importance of the project. He expressed his sincere gratitude to us for selecting Handford Estate and taking this initiative for the benefit of its people.

The main session of the day was conducted by the Deniyaya Police, who delivered an informative and practical workshop on crime awareness and its legal aspects. Conducted in both Sinhala and Tamil, the session ensured equal understanding for all workers. This dual-language approach encouraged active engagement. Community members asked questions, shared experiences and confidently participated with discussions.

After the awareness session, we offered refreshments to everyone present, creating a friendly and relaxed environment. Following this, we distributed safety shoes, gloves, and first-aid items essential for their agricultural work and daily activities. These tools will help prevent accidents and injuries, while also ensuring safer working conditions.

The core purpose of the Safe Step Project is to prevent crime and empower communities with awareness. Many workers of this estate live in vulnerable conditions and lack awareness about crime, legal rights, and protective mechanisms. Understanding how crimes occur, how to avoid becoming a victim, and what legal actions can be taken is vital for their safety and wellbeing. By presenting this information in Sinhala and Tamil, we ensured clarity, accessibility, and long-term impact.

This phase is especially important for the Handford Estate community because they have limited access to safety tools and lack the financial means to purchase them. By providing these resources, along with essential knowledge, we aim to create long-lasting positive change. Our hope is that this project will strengthen their safety, improve their confidence and build a more informed and protected community.
