Diabcure 3.0 - Phase 1
Diabetes is a Long term chronic disease which has a lot of negative effects as well as takes the life of many. The project “Diabcure 3.0 was organized as a measure of preventing this disease by conducting checkups for identifying the disease beforehand, spreading awareness and helping current patients in several SriLankan communities by looking into their needs and issues as diabetes patients. This project was conducted in three different phases where the main objective was the prevention and elimination of diabetes in different selected communities.
The first phase was basically focused on identifying diabetes patients who are unaware of their medical conditions and identifying people who are most likely to get the disease and who need medical attention accordingly. Towards delivering this to the community we chose to arrange medical checkups for two communities are who are likely to have members who are prone to this disease, the first being elders in an elders home, who doesn’t have the affection of their families and who tend to be negligible of their health conditions, and the second community being the parents of school children of a rural area consisting of low income families, who are busy with their daily routine that they don’t have time to attend to their health needs or perhaps tend to neglect their health caught up in their occupations and their children’s work or lack of awareness about diseases.
For the first checkup session, the elders in an elders’ home who are not concerned about their health, being on their own and are the most vulnerable to this disease was selected as the community. After being granted permission and support from Mayura Elders home located in Mathugama, along with the expertise and immense support given from Dr. Chinthana Ranawaka, The Medical Health Officer who acted as the resource person for the program, the elders were made aware of diabetes and individual checkups were done for every one of them and with the results, the ones identified as risky were directed to have special medical attention for the prevention of diabetes..
