Eco Clan- 4.0 - Phase 01
The covid pandemic has caused significant changes in the production and consumption of plastic and plastic waste. Hence, the Leos of University of Colombo implemented the project “Eco Clan” for the Leostic year of 2020/21 along with two phases for the fourth consecutive time. The project was focusing on “Responsible consumption and Waste management” which is highly observed in the current pandemic situation and taking necessary steps to implement these issues.
As the initial phase of the project Eco Clan 4.0, as a virtual discussion. This was held on 16th January 2021 via Zoom Cloud Meeting and Facebook live. The Guest lecture for the evening was Mr. Lakshman Jayathunga, Senior Environment Officer, Central Environment Authority, Mathara District. Through the discussion we were able to provide necessary education on irregular disposal of surgical masks, sanitizer bottles and other safety equipment and their effects and how to dispose of them in a proper manner.
The current hazardous pandemic put forth to conduct this online awareness session to preserve the environment and safety. Furthermore, it was identified that the above-mentioned youngsters and teenagers are the benefitting community who were educated on the prevention of environment pollution.
The virtual discussion started at 7pm with 65 of attendees including the resource personnel. The moderator: Leo Hashani Yasurika delivered the introduction to the session. Then, Mr. Lakshman Jayathunga started the presentation by introducing himself. Afterwards, a brief scientific introduction on waste management and its sources were elaborated by him with several examples taken globally . Next, the categories of waste were explained with the aid of practical examples. The discussion on the damage caused by waste was explained. Thereupon, the waste management methods were explained. By 8.30pm, this online webinar was successfully concluded by Leo Kuvindi Sandaleka by thanking all the participants especially Mr. Lakshman Jayathunga and the executive board of the Leo Club of University of Colombo.
