SINDU NALA RAKSHA 6.0 – PHASE I

As one of the largest community service organizations in Sri Lanka, Leo Club of University of Colombo has accomplished a huge social service by fulfilling the need of mankind. As the scope of the club is not narrowed only to mankind; Project "Sindu Nala Raksha 6.0" is initiated to 'Be the voice for the voiceless'; innocent and threatened heirs of the earth. So in first phase we decided to focus on one special species; Elephants which are the largest existing land animal on earth. They are currently under a severe threat in Sri Lanka due to human-elephant conflict and continuous unexpected accidents. Hence we thought of planning an assistance program for those who take care about injured and helpless elephants. As a result we could successfully complete the first phase of Sindu Nala Raksha on 22nd of February 2023 as a volunteering program at the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage.

On that particular day a team consisting of 13 club members headed to the Orphanage premises to execute our first phase. After completing documentation and getting ready, the team was guided how to behave and deal with those amazing species. Our first task was to cleanse the elephant sheds with the assistance of a friendly staff. After cleansing those areas, the team was supposed to fill their sheds with food like jak leaves, coconut leaves and fresh water. After completing that heavy work load, we went to 'Ma Oya' for the next task; which was very exciting and unique experience for us - "Elephant Bathing". Team was allowed to bathe 'Mathali' which was a very friendly female elephant under the supervision of the mahout. We had the opportunity to get more closer to them and observe their body nature and behavior while listening the mahout's informative description.

As we had completed a huge work load since morning our instructor Ms. Chandrika decided to conduct a session after the break. It was really informative and effective discussion on elephants, their behavior, life cycle, breeding, conservation methods, challenges they encountered, orphanage's duties and all. To mark the end of the day, we again went to their sheds to look after new born twin babies 'Disa & Sajjana'. It was a very cheerful experience to feed and bathe those infants while watching how they were struggling to catch our attention. At last, we once more stocked their sheds with food, specially for those who were sick and injured.

"They say an elephant never forgets, what they don't tell you is, you never forget an elephant".

- Bill Murray

It is acknowledged that Bill Murray is 100% accurate because although it was just a moment we spend, it certainly will remain forever. At the end of day, it was ensured that all participants carry a great knowledge and unique experience by completing this field trip as a successful event. Our effort and energy was admired by the administration of the orphanage and offered a valuable certificate as an admiration.

All the club members who participated, members who kindly helped in proceedings and the friendly staff of the orphanage will deserve a sincere gratitude for their valuable efforts and hope this will be an open invitation to wildlife lovers who were willing to engage in such activities.
