“Mathin
Thora Hetak”
Phase
2 - Drawing arts demonstrate the impact of the drugs and handing leaflets to
conscious individuals
Leo Club of the University of
Colombo continues with its effective anti-drug abuse program, Phase 2, themed “Mathin
Nidahas Samajayak” (A Society Free from the
Chains of the Mind). On February 25, 2026, we switched to community awareness
whereby we used creative arts and other educational materials to
emphasize the devastating nature of drugs.
Our enthusiastic group revealed a magnificent masterpiece at Kotahena Sinhala Kanishta Vidyalaya, the brilliant depiction of the terrible devastation drugs leaves on the precious lives, families, and colorful communities. These dramatic, monumental drawings, full of outrageous emotion and rough authenticity, were electric signs of warning, of fireside conversation and of a sense of exigency in the minds of the open-eyed students and the curious passers-by to become champions of prevention. Principal of the school gave us a most sincere warmth and radiant eulogy, and proclaimed our daring move as a ray of hope that will give the germs of a life-long vigilance to the fertile minds of the future leaders.
We also went to major urban hot spots in Sri Lanka where leaflets containing bold attractive eye-catching text were carefully distributed to ordinary commuters, busy shoppers, and local people in the hustle and bustle of their daily lives. These creatively crafted references provided a stark, unblinking image of the devastating ripple effects of drugs, such as ruined health and dysfunctional families, the gradual dissolution of community ties and societal peace, and a clarion call to be always alert, to say “NO” to temptation and tell others of any suspicious circumstances. Such a grassroots strategy carried our instantaneous message to the extremes and to deep inside varied audiences in vibrant social areas, provoking a mass-level consciousness against the drug epidemic.
Furthermore, our eager volunteers put flashy stickers of awareness on buses to make them look like moving billboards of hope and warnings cruising the busy streets of Sri Lanka. Every carefully positioned sticker-bright, in-your-face, and brimming with warning signs - served as a reminder of the terrifying nature of drugs on lives and challenged the armies of passengers to face the darkness of addiction directly, develop the strength to resist it, and commit to build a drug-free future. This was the successful strategy to make our strong anti-drug message roar through the city veins, generating a discussion, encouraging people to act, and wrapping the vigilance with the cloth of the everyday commutes of those who were riding by.
So, we completed Phase 2 of the “Mathin Thora Hetak” project in an unstoppable momentum. Being enhanced by the glowing comments of the school principal, colorful community responses, and the spirit of our team of passionate individuals, we are excited to announce “Mathin Nidahas Samajayak” a glorious victory!
