2nd Phase – “දිරි දිවි”
On 8th of March 2026, Leo club of University of Colombo successfully launched the “දිරි දිවි” the second phase of the project “දිවිසරු” at Biyagama Divisional Secretariat. The main objective of the project “දිවිසරු” is to help people who are feeling suffered with poverty and initiating new pathways to build their own life which they can live happily & optimistically. Therefore, through our second phase, we introduced soap production to the rural population as an easy self-employment opportunity that allows entrepreneurs to conquer the local market. In this phase, we conduct our programme under two sessions. One is, we planned awareness programme to provide rural people with the necessary guidelines to start the soap manufacturing industry and provide practical sessions with regarding making soap and give the raw materials needed to continue it as a business. We first worked to provide rural people with a better understanding of the soap manufacturing industry. Here, Mr. Alan held founder of Saban Mahagedara gave a special lecture on self-employment. He provided a lot of important information, from the basic knowledge of the soap manufacturing industry to how to run it as an industry. And also, he told what the benefit of this soap manufacturing industries have and how get them. Here is no doubt that this soap manufacturing industry awareness program has been a great help to our people who are interested in supporting the local industry and who want to work as entrepreneurs.
Secondly, the Leos, who did not stop at raising awareness, took steps to provide all the raw materials needed for the industry to the rural people, laying the foundation for the dream of self-employment. In this session, we got them knowledge about making soaps, washing powder and washing liquid and we mainly focused about guiding them for manufacturing soaps and try them out practically. Giving such opportunity for people is very helpful for making our programme better and they appreciated it. Then we handed out raw material set which are helping to make such production.
Here, in this programme 30 Grama Seva Divisions belonging to the Biyagama Divisional Secretariat were covered. It also made it possible to increase the contribution made by family units. Furthermore, we created a WhatsApp group to bring together the family units involved in the program, and through it, we are very happy to be able to provide regular updates and support their production process. The aim of the overall program is to provide the basic foundation needed for the poor people living in villages to contribute to the country with their own abilities. Although the main objective of this program was for the soap manufacturing industry, the sole objective of the Leo Society is to empower people who have the potential to become a strength to the local economy.
Accordingly, the “දිරි දිවි” project
is a great way to nourish a person's life with courage. It should also be noted
that the Leo club is constantly committed to supporting people to succeed in
life by performing such noble tasks. Stay tuned to help make more lives
successful in the future. Thank you.
