Project Dayada - Phase 02 Nawa jiwa
Project Dayada - Phase 02 Nawa jiwa
Leo Club of the University of
Colombo successfully carried out the Phase 2 project Dayada titled “Nawa jiwa”
on 26th February 2026 at the premises of Sri Sumamarama Viharaya, South Etiyawala.
This phase focused on improving the financial literacy and technical knowledge.
The program empowered the elders.
We chose this project because many elders in our society face challenges in understanding modern banking systems, digital technology, and financial security, which are essential in today’s world. As a university committed to community service, we recognized the importance of empowering senior citizens with practical knowledge while also preserving their valuable cultural heritage. By improving their financial literacy and technical skills, the project helped build their confidence and independence. At the same time, cultural activities and traditional knowledge sharing strengthened the bond between generations, allowing young people to learn from the wisdom and experience of elders. Therefore, this project was selected not only to educate but also to honor, respect, and unite generations within our community
A financial awareness session was conducted by banking officers, covering savings, secure transactions, and financial protection. A technical workshop guided elders in using mobile phones, the internet, and modern technology safely. Cultural activities such as the dramas “Nari Bana” and “Diktala Kalagola,” along with dance performances by the Leo members, added entertainment and engagement. A traditional cooking demonstration of Kurakkan Kandha was also held to share valuable cultural knowledge with the younger generation.
The second phase of the “Dayada”
project, organized by the Leo members for the Nalum Elders' Association,
created a meaningful and lasting impact on both the elders and the younger
generation. By improving financial literacy and technical knowledge, the
program empowered the elders to manage their savings confidently, use banking
services safely, and adapt to modern technology without fear. The awareness
shared by banking professionals and resource persons strengthened their sense
of security and independence in an increasingly digital world. At the same
time, the cultural activities, dramas, and traditional cooking sessions helped
preserve valuable traditions while building mutual respect and understanding
between generations. Overall, the project not only enhanced practical knowledge
but also fostered unity, confidence, and social connection within the
community, leaving a positive and sustainable influence on everyone involved.
We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Mr. Deepal Wijenayake and the bank officers for their valuable guidance on banking and financial security, and to Mr. Ravindu Jayasuriya for his informative technical session. Our special thanks also go to Mrs. Lakshika from the Attorney General’s Office for her presence and encouragement. The continuous guidance and support of the President of the Nalum Elders' Association, Mrs. Pushpa, played a vital role in the success of this program.
We are also thankful to the elders
for their active participation, especially in the dramas and traditional
cooking sessions, which added color and cultural value to the event. Finally,
we extend our appreciation to everyone who contributed directly and indirectly
to make this project a success.
This program was not just an event, but a memorable journey of learning, respect, and unity. It further strengthened our commitment to serving the community and continuing this meaningful “gift” journey in the future.
