Harithajeewa 1.0 – Phase 01 “Turtle Conservation”

"Protecting Our Precious Turtles: A Call to Conservation"

Turtles, with their ancient wisdom and majestic presence, have long captured the human imagination. However, these fascinating creatures face unprecedented threats due to habitat destruction, pollution, and poaching in Sri Lanka. In response to this crisis, concerted efforts towards turtle conservation have become increasingly crucial. As the 1st phase of “Harithajeewa 1.0” project conducted through Leo Club of University of Colombo delves into the vital role of turtle conservation efforts and the collaborative endeavors undertaken to safeguard these remarkable species focusing at the Wellabada Turtle Hatchery in Galle through this article.

At 10 a.m. the committee members gathered at Wellabada Turtle Hatchery in Galle to commence a vital conservation project aimed at protecting the future of turtles. The project kicked off with the active participation of committee members, each bringing their expertise and commitment together. Laborers had embarked on the meticulous task of tank preparation using donated raw materials, setting the stage for the protection and nurturing of turtle habitats of blinded and spotted turtles. Committee members gave their support and contribution by cleaning the tanks and providing seawater sourced directly from the sea to the tanks in nesting sites for turtles, each contribution plays a pivotal role in fostering a conducive environment for turtle survival.

With powerful flippers, these gentle creatures meticulously dig deep nests in the sand and delicately deposit their eggs in clusters, we prepared a haven for their precious offspring. Each egg is carefully covered with sand, creating a natural barrier that ensures their safety during the incubation period. These proactive steps are essential in safeguarding the future generations of turtles and preserving their dwindling populations. Amidst conservation activities, Leo Yasanga Hewaliyanage and Leo Sandun Sanjeewa captured photographs and videos of the moments of our work. The staff members of that conservation center gave high appreciation and thanks to the Leo Club of University of Colombo and Harithajeewa 1.0 committee.

In the face of mounting threats, turtle conservation emerges as a beacon of hope for these vulnerable species. Through collaborative efforts, unwavering dedication, we can pave the way for a brighter future where turtles thrive in their natural habitats. Let us stand united in our commitment to protecting these magnificent creatures and preserving the rich tapestry of life that they represent.
