Project Harithajeewa - Phase 02

"Planting Hope and Preserving Nature"

On the 16th of February 2024, the Leo Club of University of Colombo embarked on the second phase of Project Harithajeewa, a mangrove planting initiative, at the picturesque Gin Ganga area. This day, etched into our memories, was not just about planting trees but also about fostering connections and creating lasting impressions. As our bus reached into the Gin Ganga area around 9:30 a.m. in the morning, excitement mingled with the anticipation of the day ahead. Stepping off the bus, we were greeted by the coordinator, who would guide us through the day’s activities.

The beauty of the surroundings captivated us instantly. The tranquil waters of the Gin Ganga, flanked by lush greenery, provided the perfect backdrop for our mission. With instructions in hand, we set out to begin our task of planting mangroves, a vital step in preserving the delicate ecosystem of the area. What made this phase of Project Harithajeewa truly special was the involvement of tourists, fellow university students, who joined us in our endeavor. Together, we formed a diverse group united by a common goal of give back to nature and make a positive impact on the environment.

As we dug into the earth and carefully placed each sapling, a sense of camaraderie filled the air. We laughed, shared stories, and marveled at the beauty surrounding us. Working side by side with our newfound friends, we experienced the joy of collaboration and the satisfaction of knowing that our efforts would bear fruit in the form of thriving mangrove forests.

With each plant we nurtured, we planted not just trees but also seeds of friendship and understanding. One day, those tiny saplings would grow into majestic trees, a testament to our collective effort and dedication.

As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the horizon, we knew our work was done. Boarding the bus for home, we carried with us not only memories of a day well spent but also a sense of fulfilment and accomplishment. Though our hands may have been tired, our hearts were full, knowing that we had made a difference, one tree at a time.
