මතින් තොර හෙටක් Phase 3
As the third step of the project, we organized an all-Island art competition covering the whole of Sri Lanka under the theme "මතින් තොර හෙටක්" to educate schoolchildren about the negative effects of drugs. From all the pictures that came to us, five pictures each from one age group were selected by Professor Chamini K. Hemachandra, head of the Department of Environmental Technology in the Faculty of Technology, and Dr. Nethmini, senior lecturer in the agricultural technology department. Then those drawings were chosen by Mr. Lion Danushka Sandanayake, who came as the chief guest at the February monthly meeting. We went to the school of the student who won first place in All Island in the 6–9th-grade section and organized an awareness program for the students of that school about the negative effects of drugs. This programme is on 19th March, 2024 at Prince of Wales College, Rawathawatta, Moratuwa. Dr. Indunil Jayasinghe of the Community Health Medical Unit of Lunawa Ayurveda Hospital was the resource person for the session.
More than 350 students in the 9th grade of the
school participated in this awareness program held at The Prince of Wales College
Rawathawatta, Moratuwa. In the beginning, the resource person gave a
rough explanation about drugs, modern drugs available in the current market,
their adverse effects, how they are used in Sri Lanka, and how to protect
themselves and the whole society from those drugs. Then the doctor
discussed how drug addiction affects his life, family, career, and mental
health-related problems. He also shared some of his own bad professional
experiences with the students about how to avoid these drugs and how social
media promotes them. Sharing was explained in this session.
The members of the Leo Club who made this phase
successful are appreciated for their support, and we express our thanks to the
resource person, Dr. Indunil Jayasinghe. Also, we would like to express our
respectful thanks to the police, principal, deputy principal, and all academic
and non-academic staff for giving us this opportunity.
