Nisagini 7.0 - Phase 02

  The environmental restoration of each farm is only one part of our program. Each farmer has social and economic goals which we consider, and that helps determine what crops they grow or how much of each crop they grow.’’ The නිසාගිනි 7.0 project was implemented with the aim of ‘Developing inclusive economic opportunities for small - scale farmers.’ But this was not just an issue of tapping into global demand. It was a matter of building a valuable bridge between rural producers and booming markets. This project 7.0, 2ndphase named "එතෙර අරුණ" was implemented on April 17, 2025 with the aim of opening up export markets and business.   On April 23, 2025, the University of Colombo Leo Club successfully organized its annual Sinhala and Tamil New Year event, "පුරවර සරසවි සූර්ය මංගල්‍යය‘25" Leos, Students and special guests gathered to celebrate the New year of Sri Lankan culture at the event, which was held in front of the Faculty of Education. The event was a wonderful way to celebrate the upcoming year in harmony and joy, complete with vibrant decorations, happy faces, and exciting activities. Leo Praveen Kavinda, the Region Chairperson of Region 01; Leo Lion Ravindi Hettiarachchi PFLM, the Chief Region Chairperson; and District President: Leo Nisal Dulmith FLM, the District President, were our honoured chief guests.             Sathkara – Phase 03: Smile      Colouring Lives, Creating Connections At the University of Colombo, community service is deeply rooted in a commitment to creating meaningful change. Continuing this spirit of service, the Leo Club of the University of Colombo, in collaboration with the Oruwala Lions Club, proudly carried out phase 3 under the slogan "නවමු රටකට මනුදම් මෙහෙවරක්". This phase marked another powerful milestone in a three-phase initiative focused on uplifting lives through education, healthcare, and compassionate outreach.   The University of Colombo (UOC) Leo Club has launched its official T-shirt to build unity and pride among members. The idea came from a desire to create a stronger sense of identity. Members helped design the T-shirt, which includes the Leo Club logo and university spirit, using colors that show energy and professionalism. Wearing the T-shirt shows you’re part of the club and committed to helping others. It’s great for events, projects, or just showing club spirit on campus. The first batch of T-shirts has already been handed out, and members are very excited. If you ordered one, pick it up at the Management Faculty on April 1st at 10 AM. On April 1st, the second phase of the Plant a Hope initiative was proudly launched under the name "PenBin Love at Reid." This phase marks a significant stride in promoting environmental consciousness across the university, with a focused goal: to provide an eco-friendly solution for the disposal of used pens. The core objective of “ PenBin Love at Reid ’’ is to install dedicated pen bins in each faculty and College House, creating a sustainable disposal system for students' wasted pens. Once filled, these bins will be collected and the pens sent for recycling—turning waste into a new beginning, rather than letting it end up in landfills.   Project Diabcure 7.0: Shaping Hope, Strength, and Support Project Diabcure 7.0 is a motivating project focused on supporting people suffering from diabetes by forming communities, raising awareness, and increasing access to care. This project aims to help patients overcome their constraints with positive assistance, guidance, and resources through support groups, lifestyle workshops, and programs that require their attendance. Diabcure 7.0 launched its first phase named Hope and Harmony on March 10, 2025, at the Dialysis Unit of Kandy General Hospital and Dr. Thilak Abeysekara Kidney Unit in Hanthana. This landmark event included two powerful modules to support the holistic needs of patients on dialysis.     Justice Beyond the Cell : Providing Legal Aid to Inmates in Need On the 26th of March, our team of 20 dedicated members participated in Phase 2 of the "WISADAMU" project at the Welikada Prison complex, providing free legal consultation to remand prisoners. The group was divided into two teams: Group 01 visited the New Magazine Prison, where we interacted with 22 female prisoners, while Group 02 went to Colombo Remand Prison, offering legal advice to 20 male prisoners. The most pressing issue faced by many of the prisoners was their inability to obtain bail due to various legal challenges. A significant number of them were unable to afford bail due to their economic circumstances, while others had no relatives or legal representation to assist them in securing their release. Our lawyers worked diligently to offer practical advice and solutions, helping prisoners understand their rights and potential legal avenues.   Empowering Women for a Safer Tomorrow: Sureki Hetak 8.0 – Phase 01 Sureki Hetak 8.0 project “First phase” earned its name from the quote “Empower women, and secure tomorrow.” This phase was aimed at alumni women students who learned the first aid and self-defense methods. It was executed under the direction of Leo club of University of Colombo. The focus of this session of the training was for the young women to cope not only with medical emergencies but also with potential physical attacks. This phase of the project was attended with great enthusiasm by the university students. The students were provided two interrelated forms of training, one dealing with the medical side and the other with security.
