Senehase Datha

Alert 9.0 is a humanitarian initiative introduced by Leo Club of University of Colombo with the profound objective of supporting children who are affected by cancer. Designed as a comprehensive three-phase mission, the project addresses different facets of the battle against childhood cancer, from public education to direct patient care. As of now, the club has successfully completed the first two phases of this journey. The first phase, “Sihina Piyapath,” laid the foundation by focusing on the power of information through a nationwide awareness campaign. Building upon this, the second phase, titled

Senehase Datha,” shifted the focus entirely to the power of care, moving from advocacy to action to address the tangible physical and emotional needs of the children.

The first segment of "Senehase Datha" centered on infrastructure development at Apeksha Cancer Hospital, Maharagama, driven by the recognition that a healing environment is essential for recovery. On December 23rd, 2025, the team successfully completed a major renovation project within the pediatric unit, transforming a previously dilapidated room into a vibrant, air-conditioned learning space to ensure that a child's education does not have to pause during hospitalization. Additionally, the project constructed and furnished a dedicated staff room for nurses and volunteer teachers, acknowledging that better staff welfare leads to a better patient care. This segment concluded by establishing a permanent, supportive foundation within the hospital walls, proving that a comfortable environment is a crucial part of the healing process.

The mission of care continued in the second segment at the “Suwa Arana” transit home, managing under Indira Cancer Trust, from January 19th to 21st, 2026, focusing on the psychological well-being of the children. This three-day interactive program was designed to combat the stress and boredom of long-term illness through creativity and connection. The sessions included art therapy to provide an emotional outlet, music therapy with guest artists to offer a soothing escape, and educational teaching sessions to bridge academic gaps. This segment concluded by replacing the sterile routine of treatment with color and melody, successfully lifting the spirits of both the children and their families during their most difficult times.

In conclusion, the second phase of Project Alert 9.0 has left an indelible mark by seamlessly combining sustainable infrastructure development with compassionate therapeutic care. By renovating the physical walls of the hospital and nurturing the emotional hearts of the patients, Leo Club of University of Colombo has demonstrated a holistic approach to service. This initiative stands as a testament to the belief that we can create a future where every child, regardless of their diagnosis, is given the chance to live, learn, and hope.
