Caring for two lives, supporting one journey

Thirtha – Phase 01: Mathru

On March 10, 2026, Leo Club of University of Colombo carried out the first phase of its signature project Thirtha, titled Mathru, with the guidance of the Oruwala Lions Club at the MOH Clinic in Maningala Nattandiya, conducted from 10.00 a.m. onwards. This initiative focused on supporting pregnant mothers by addressing both their physical and mental well-being.

This phase was organized with the coordination of the Divisional Secretariate Office in Nattandiya and under the valuable guidance of MOH Nattandiya, Dr. Ajith Hemantha, who played a key role in identifying the Maningala area as a suitable location for the project. With his continuous support and coordination, the team successfully obtained permission from the RDHS Office in Puttalam, which also provided details of 30 pregnant mothers in need of assistance.

Recognizing the challenges faced by expecting mothers, especially in underserved communities, the project aimed to ease their journey into motherhood. As part of the initiative, 30 hospital bags were distributed, each containing essential items such as diapers, baby shampoo, cologne, and other newborn care products. These were provided in collaboration with Baby Cheramy brand, ensuring that the mothers received practical and timely support.

However, the project extended beyond material aid. Understanding the importance of mental health during pregnancy, a special session on postpartum depression was conducted by Dr. Ajith Hemantha. The session created a safe and welcoming space for mothers to openly share their thoughts and experiences. It was highly interactive, with meaningful conversations that helped raise awareness and provide emotional reassurance to the participants.

The success of the project was further strengthened by the dedication of the RDHS Office staff, especially midwife Ms. Maheesai Maningala, who played an essential role in connecting with the mothers and ensuring their participation.

To conclude the event, all attendees were served a nutritious drink made from kurakkan, symbolizing care, nourishment, and community support. The simple gesture added warmth to the event and was well appreciated by everyone present.

Mathru, as the First Phase of project ‘Thirtha’ marked a meaningful beginning in the journey of empowering mothers. It was not just about providing essentials, but about creating awareness, offering emotional support, and building a sense of community. Through this initiative, Leo Club of University of Colombo took a step towards nurturing healthier families and stronger futures.
