Second phase of the Safe Step Project
Second phase of the Safe Step Project
On the 3rd of March 2026, from 8.00 a.m. to 11.00 a.m. Leo Club of University of Colombo successfully completed the second phase of the Safe Step Project "safe youth" at KE/Daranagama National School, Siyambalape.
The ‘safe steps’ project is a comprehensive three- stages initiative aimed at minimizing crimes and accidents in our society, this phase focused on cybercrime and self- defense, especially for grade 11, 12 and 13 school students. In an era where safety concerns both physical and digital are at an all-time high, taking proactive steps to educate our youth is more important than ever. Our second phase was specifically designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the modern world safely.
On the project day a small gathering was held before commencing the
sessions.
The School Principal, together with his academic staff members, attended the event and warmly welcomed our team. The Attorney- at- Law, Mr. Ayeshmantha Gayan, along with Mr. Madusanka Rodrigo, the Chief Instructor of Shadow Fighters Kick Boxing Association also joined with our session, extending their support and encouragement. After we explained the purpose of the phase, the School Principal addressed the school students, emphasizing the importance of the project. He expressed his sincere gratitude to us for selecting Daranagama National School and taking this initiative for the benefit of the students.
The session focused on two critical areas, Cyber Security and
Physical Self- Defense. Cyber Security session was conducted by the Attorney-
at- Law Mr. Ayeshmantha Gayan, a visiting lecturer at the University of
Colombo, who conducted an insightful session. He guided students through the
legalities of the digital world and provided practical advice on how to stay
safe online. On the other hand, our Physical Self- Defense session was
conducted by Instructor Mr. Madusanka Rodrigo. Safety is not just digital; it
is physical too. This practical training empowered students to protect
themselves in vulnerable situations, boosting their confidence and physical
awareness.
The event saw an incredible turnout, with nearly 150 students from
grade 11,12 and 13 participating. It was heartening to see the enthusiasm of
the students as they engaged with the experts and practiced new skills.
Members of Leo Club of University of Colombo were present to facilitate to sessions, bridging the gap between university students and school- level youth through mentorship and shared learning. With the rise of digital connectivity, cybercrime has become a significant threat. Many students at this school in vulnerable conditions and lack awareness about cybercrime, legal rights, and protective mechanisms. Understanding how crimes occur, how to stay safe online, and what legal actions can be taken is vital for their safety and wellbeing. By presenting this information in Sinhala, we ensured clarity, accessibility, and long-term impact.
This phase is especially important for the Daranagama National
School students because they have not aware about cybercrimes and self- defense.
By providing knowledge on these areas, we aim to create long-lasting positive
change. Our hope is that this project will strengthen their safety, improve
their confidence and build a more informed and protected community.
