Project Dayadha
Phase 03 ‘Pragathi’
Leo Club of the University of Colombo successfully carried out Phase 03 of the Dayadha project titled “Pragathi”, held on 9th April 2026 at the Divisional Secretariat Office in Dankotuwa. This phase was designed to empower selected elders engaged in small scale businesses while also rising awareness among younger generations through the distribution of informative leaflets about the importance of elder care and social responsibility. The project positively impacted both elders and youth. Elders were empowered with resources to improve their small businesses, increasing their confidence and financial independence. At the same time, the awareness program encouraged youth to develop respect, empathy, and responsibility towards elders, helping to build stronger connections between generations
Phase 03 “Pragathi” included several meaningful activities carried out with the active participation of Leo members. Essential tools and equipment were distributed to selected elders engaged in small scale businesses. These included flower plants, vegetable plants, pots, steamers, and handicraft materials, which support agricultural and food-based entrepreneurial activities. These resources were provided to strengthen their self-employment and improve their income generating potential. In parallel, an awareness program was conducted for youth, where Leo members distributed informative leaflets promoting the importance of caring for elders. This initiative encouraged respect, responsibility, and social awareness among younger generations.
The third Phase of “Dayadha” project created a positive and meaningful impact on both elders and youth, for elders, the project provided practical support to strengthen their small businesses, improving their financial stability and independence. This empowerment increased their confidence and allowed them to actively contribute to their own livelihoods. For the younger generation, the awareness program helped build a deeper understanding of elder care. It encouraged value such as respect, compassion, and social responsibility, fostering stronger relationships between generations.
In conclusion, Phase 03 “Pragathi” of the Dayadha project was a well-rounded initiative that combined economic empowerment with social awareness. By supporting elder entrepreneurship and educating the younger generation, the project created a meaningful and lasting impact on the community. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Divisional Secretary Mrs. Vijani Vasanthika, Assistant Divisional Secretary Mrs. Nilanthi, and Elders’ Rights Promotion Officer Mrs. Lakshika Madhushani for their invaluable support and guidance in making this project a success. we also thank all participating elders, Leo members and supporters who contributed to the success of this project. This initiative stands as a testament to the power of community service in building a society that values, respects, and empowers its elders while inspiring future generations to do the same.
