Leo Movement Reaches New Heights Through Sports

Leo Club of University of Colombo made history on April 9, 2026, by organising the first-ever invitational weightlifting championship in the Leo movement’s history. Held at the University’s Department of Physical Education, Leo Infinity - Phase 2: Leo Sports Fiesta 2026 brought together a community of dedicated athletes and distinguished leaders. The event served as a prestigious platform for teams from the University of Colombo, University of Kelaniya, University of Ruhuna, and University of Sabaragamuwa, featuring approximately 60 male and female lifters competing across 15 weight categories. More than just a quest for medals, the tournament provided a vital opportunity for these athletes to engage in a friendly yet professional competitive environment, serving as a strategic rehearsal for the upcoming Inter-University Games.

The significance of the day was highlighted by the presence of an esteemed guest list, including Professor Indika Mahesh Karunathilake, Vice Chancellor of the University of Colombo, and Professor H.M. Nihal Hennayake, Dean of the Faculty of Management and Finance. Representing the Leo leadership were Multiple District President, Leo Multiple District 306, Sri Lanka and Maldives, Leo Lion Rageesh Yogeswaran MJF PMAF PFLM, District President, Leo District 306 D6, Leo Anjana Udesh FLM, and District Vice President Leo Lion Ravindi Hettiarachchi PFLM, and Leo District 306 D6 Council members whose support underscored the importance of sportsmanship within the youth movement. Their presence added a layer of formal distinction to an event that celebrated both physical strength and organizational excellence.

As the competition reached its climax, the sheer dominance of the host institution became clear. The University of Colombo Weightlifting Team delivered a powerhouse performance, securing the Overall Championship in both the Men’s and Women’s divisions. Their discipline and precision on the platform were unmatched, though they were pushed every step of the way by the University of Kelaniya, who rightfully earned the First Runner-up position after a series of remarkable lifts.

The grand finale of the day was the award ceremony, a moment of profound pride and recognition. To honor their incredible feats of strength, the winners were awarded gleaming trophies, medals, and certificates of achievement. These accolades served as a tangible reminder of the hours of sweat and sacrifice poured into their training. For every participant, the certificates were more than just paper; they were a testament to being part of a historic first in the Leo movement. Leo Infinity – Phase 2 concluded not just with a tally of weights lifted, but with the successful launch of a new sporting legacy that will undoubtedly inspire future generations of university athletes.
