Phase 3  “Soduru wadanak – Mathata thithak”

Leo Club of the University of Colombo held the third phase of the “Mathin Thora Hetak (For a tomorrow from drug free)” project via online on 25th April 2026, furthering its mission to raise awareness about drug abuse prevention among young people. This phase featured an interactive and impactful speech competition titled “Sonduru Wadanak, Mathata Thithak,” aiming to inspire youth to use their voices to promote a drug-free society.

The competition showed a group of inspiring young speakers who delivered powerful speeches on the devastating consequences of drug addiction. The speakers shed light on the harmful social, psychological and physical effects of drug addiction. Theydiscussed how drug abuse not only ravages the lives of individuals but also harms families, communities, and the nation at large. The students' speeches demonstrated awareness, empathy, accountability and a drive for positive social changes.
This
stage of the competition was more than just a speaking event; it was an opportunity for youth empowerment and growth. They were given the chance to critically think about a social issue and to articulate their views and opinions. As a result, this experience helped them improve their communication skills, presentation, leadership and confidence. The program empowered young people to become active citizen leaders with the ability to positively impact their community and society. The virtual format of the program was able to keep the energy, engagement and excitement at a high level. The virtual approach is extremely effective in engaging a broader audience, regardless of geographical location, in the campaign. It also shows that role of technology in contemporary awareness campaigns, particularly in fostering community engagement and delivering impactful messages.
The successful Phase 3 event is a significant achievement for the “Mathin Thora Hetak”
project. The event ended with a successful award ceremony, where the impressive performances of the participants were recognized and their hard work and determination acknowledged. This is a testament to the dedication, teamwork and enthusiasm of the event committee, and the commitment of the participants. All activities, such as the competition and award ceremony, were designed to be educational and interactive.

Most importantly, this phase strengthens the campaign's aim of creating an informed, responsible and drug-savvy generation. The project provides space and opportunity for long-term change through ongoing youth engagement in positive activities. As it progresses,“Mathin Thora Hetak” continues to pursue a drug-free community. By continuing to raise awareness, educating, involve, and rewarding the talent of our youth, it will contribute to a safer, healthier and better future for everyone.
